Rebuild of Server, For 4K transcode and 10GB ethernet

Recommended Posts

My media Server is getting close to 10 years old and am looking to upgrade because of 4K content. I have 2K movies in 1080P and close to 500 MKV 4K uncompressed rips of movies. With my current server it can't handle transcoding the 4K movies. I would like to watch my media and for others to watch my 4K movies using Plex and Jellyfish. I would also like to store movies and other large files on server without it taking 30-40 minutes to transfer. I plan on buying a unifi agg switch and connect to my workstations and my rebuiult sever to my sever using 10GB SPF+.

I am looking for something rock solid that will last and don't want to spend days getting it going so looking for a proven mother board and CPU that will more than meet my needs. While money is important I don't mind spending more for future proofing and something I know I can spend a day on getting going without troubleshooting known issues. Between the new motherboard and CPU I would like to keep cost around $1K.

CURRENT SERVER:
Unraid 6.12.10, SuperMicro X95CL/X9SCM , Intel Xeon CPU E3-1230 v2 @ 3.3 GHz, 8GB DDR3, Samsung 1TB SSD for Cache, LSII SA2116 PCI Express SAS-2 controller, 2 Parity 8TB,  6 8TB disks, 5 4TB disks for total of 11 disks for storage excluding parity.

NEW SERVER REQUIREMENTS:
Use existing chassis, New motherboard, new CPU. AMD or Intel? Which version? Needs a built in SPF+ nic. Do I need a new powersupply?

POWER CONSUMPTION:
Not too much more than the current Server.

HARD DRIVES (Same as Current):
2 Parity 8TB,  6 8TB disks, 5 4TB disks for total of 11 disks.

VMs:
None that I can for see. But would like 1 to be available if needed in future.

DOCKERS that would be normally in use:
1.Plex and Jellyfin be able to stream at least 3-4 4K movies at once.

TRANSCODING:
Up to 6 streams at a time for Plex and Jellyfish in 4K without issues.

Got CWWK Q670 and I'm using Unraid 7.0.0 beta2 with:

intel i5-13500 (PL2 set to 65W - no need for more power)

96GB DDR5 Corsair (2x48)

2x M2 2TB (one cache and the other one buffer for qbittorent).

M.2 to SATA 3.0 6 ports (ASM116) on the back/top M2 slot - works on any of 3 M.2 slots - tested by myself

Mellanox MT26448 10Gig (DAC) - on pci slot

10x Seagate ST16000NM000J (16TB) in zfs

Works perfect -> 0 issues

Main job: Plex media server - and some other irrelevant docker containers and one vm

- the system power consumption measured from the wall 75-90W (zfs disks = never spindown) spikes to 100-120W with 4-6 streams (some with transcoding)

The motherboard also support PCI bifurcation (only 8x8) by a jumper so you can use 2x PCI (8x) cards (tested by myself with Mellanox card and SPARKLE ECO Arc A310 = the reason of 7.0.0 beta2)

They also have a new one:

hope i give you some ideas :)

Note: The BIOS is HUGE - you can fine tunning almost everything (assuming you know what you doing :D) spent more than one hour there with settings :)
