Unraid Crashing requiring hard reboot

Featured Replies

Ive been having crashing every few weeks recently. I'm on unraid 6.12.6. My docker containers are on ipvlan. Not sure when it crashed but I rebooted on Aug 9 7:41.

Unfortunately there's nothing relevant logged, this can be a hardware issue, one thing you can try is to boot the server in safe mode with all docker containers/VMs disabled, let it run as a basic NAS for a few days, if it still crashes it's likely a hardware problem, if it doesn't start turning on the other services one by one.

That sounds like a nightmare lol. Thanks I'll look into it.

when it happens my server is still physically running I just can't access unraid or anything. is there any common hardware failures I should look out for?

Could be RAM, board, CPU, PSU for example, but could also be a container or plugin.

I had another crash. Im guessing its the same deal. Its seems like its around the same time for whatever reason too.

Still nothing relevant logged I'm afraid.

I just changed a bunch of BIOS settings that if anything should help.

  • PSU Idle power control to typical
  • I disabled global C states
  • turned off xmp
  • turned off secure boot
  • disabled onboard audio

and I'm running a memtest.

Not that I know anything but so far all the crashes have been overnight and for whatever reason the power button isn't functional while its crashed I need to pull the plug. That makes me wonder if it was related to the sleep settings that I disabled.

I had another crash today after all the changes. Its a shot in the dark and I did some reading and apparently people have issues with organizr being on /mnt/user/appdata/organizrv2 instead of /mnt/cache/appdata. If that doesn't fix it i'll run it in safemode and see what happens. I also had read that people have had issues with leaving the webui open all the time which I have been doing with unraid and organizr on 2 PCs. So I'll stop that and see what happens.

I'm just posting all this so if I ever solve this It'll hopefully help somebody in the future.

I’ve narrowed it down to Plex. I’ve even created a new container and it still crashes. It seems to be during scheduled tasks. There’s more than a few people with this issue online. I’ll have to narrow it down.

Yep, there have been many other reports of Plex crashing servers.

Its been a pain in the ass but i've figured it out. No crash in over 3 weeks. The changes I made were i change the path to /mnt/cache/appdata/binhex-plexpass/ from the default that was /mnt/user/appdata/binhex-plexpass/ . I'm not sure if there will be any unintended consequences to this change but it worked for me.

The other thing I did was I added --no-healthcheck to the extra parameters in the docker container. Hopefully this helps people with the same issue in the future.
