Question about WOL Magic Packets

Featured Replies

I have a question about the WOL Magic Packet,

Lets say the server is in a WOL sleep.  Then if a Windows client tries to access the server while it is WOL sleep, nothing happens.  From what I have read  the client needs to be configured to 'know' that it needs to send the Magic Packet.

Correct?

If you have DD-WRT router like a Buffalo. You can have the router send a WOL packet.

The other method is to check your network card/motherboard settings and see if it has a WOL "any packet" - which will wake up the server if it says any type of packet for its mac address.

Often these settings have to be enabled via a tool or driver in windows.  again, check your network adapter manual or bios manual if its integrated.

Note: windows could time out and give an error the first time it tries to access the sleeping server...
