January 27, 201214 yr Another external drive deal. If you're desperate and willing to take the chance of it having a non-standard interface (I've read about some drives in external enclosures not having a sata connection), or voiding your warranty by removing it from the enclosure: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136876&Tpk=elements%203tb&AID=10657534&PID=749547&SID=forums&nm_mc=AFC-C8junctionCA Enjoy!
January 27, 201214 yr 3TB and they only put USB 2 interface on it... dumb WD... I would hope it has a standard drive in it so that you can take it out and make it more useful.
February 8, 201214 yr Ok, we have a WD30EZRS inside. Starting to preclear as we speak..... Getting desperately low on space in this server that is only used to store images for a photo studio. Man are we chewing up space. And now we want to get into video. It will get worse before it gets better..... I see no other reference to this drive here either bad or good yet. Fingers crossed....
February 8, 201214 yr Author Ok, we have a WD30EZRS inside. Starting to preclear as we speak..... Excellent! Thanks for reporting back! . Will you be able to re-use the external case with another drive, or did you have to break it to open it?
February 8, 201214 yr It came with a plastic shell that I had to gouge open, but the damage to it is minimal. There is no screws to open it up. I just pried it open with a screwdriver. The drive was encased in corner rubber bumpers, so depending of the drive it might not fit the same. The Sata to USB interface board was screwed on the back of the drive. If it was USB3 it might be more useful, but USB2, who needs more of those?
February 11, 201214 yr Preclear took over 40 hrs. I'm guessing these might be a little slower than the Hitachi 3tb drives. I seem to recall 35 hrs for a Hitachi 3tb.
