Offline disk storage - a.k.a dumb plastic boxes

Featured Replies

So if like me you have a bunch of disks that aren't online you likely use the shoebox storage technique.

I have been looking for a while for a way to store a couple of hundred 3.5" disks in a relatively neat and secure way without breaking the bank.

So i finally found these in IKEA of all places:

Each box (lid sold separately) holds 8 disks. It is not a perfect fit but it is bloody close match for a generic produc. With the lid on they stack securely and they are very strong with good grip points.

And they are cheap... really cheap. For $40 USD you get space for 160 HDDs

Some may worry about static etc but I am not too bothered for my purpose as the disks go in and come out rarely.

Hope this helps someone.

Part number Box 701.029.72

Sold globally using same part numbers

LOL!!!  ;D

I gotta say.. with the hard drive shortage recently, I was pretty glad I've been hoarding all these spares in my closet.

Unraid in and of itself is an enabler to hoarders.  :)

I would never keep 160 drives. LOl I have about 50 drives and I'm itching to get rid of some.

yeah to be fair i could bin many of my disks but i have always had a policy of shelf rather than destroy. backups of backups probably dont add any redundancy as they are in the same place but it removes any risk of data leakage and its a no brainer to put a lael ona  disk, index it and then pop it on a shelf.

dban does a nice job at erasing...

Also badblocks can do the same 7 pass erase/scrub if you want to.. it just takes a long time.
