10Minute boot time on Gigabyte MB

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've created an Unraid system based on a Gigabyte GA-8I865G775-G  LGA 775 Celeron-D 2.8Ghz.  It all works and every thing is fine. But it takes Ages to boot. Nearly 10 Minutes.

If I boot from my laptop its relatively fast. A minute.

Basically I can see that the USB card is accessed to load the BZIMAGE file to load the system into memory. But it take 10minutes to load this file.

Has anyone come across this issue before? Even if it where running at just USB 1.1 it should be a lot faster than it is?

Thanks

I have the same motherboard and the same problem.

Anyone got any ideas ?

This is due to the Flash being read in USB1.1 mode instead of USB2.0 mode.  Look at your bios and ensure USB2.0 is enabled.  Some bios also have an option to let you select between "Full speed" and "Hi speed" - you want "Hi speed".

There are no settings for USB Speed. The settings I have are:

USB Controller                  [Enabled]

USB 2.0 Controller              [Enabled]

USB Keyboard Support        [Disabled]

USB Mouse Support            [Disabled]

USB Legacy Storage Detect [Enabled]

If I disable USB Legacy Storage Detect it will not boot.

If I disable USB 2.0 Controller it does boot, at the same slow speed. So I do believe its mistakenly thinking its a USB 1.1 device. I will have a dig around and see if I can uncover anything eslewhere.

We encountered m/b's in the past which exhibited this behavior: of being set up in USB2.0 mode in bios, yet still slowly reading the Flash.  Then after system boots, flash access is at USB2.0 speed.  Have also seen the reverse: boots fast, but linux somehow thinks it's USB1.1.  Off-hand can't remember exact m/b's & bios revs, but was in early unRAID testing probably 18 months ago.

Also, I found that using a different USB slot got mine to work correctly, although in my case the server wouldn't boot at all until I moved it.

If all else fails give that a try.
