Smart errors. Is this hard drive bad, or am I reading things wrong?

Featured Replies

I'm sorry that I'm posting what seems to be a common problem, but I feel like I'm getting mixed answers reading through other posts.

I finally decided to upgrade my parity drives and purchased two recertified 22TB drives from GoHardDrive. I ran a preclear on both and didn't see any issues pop up, so I pulled a drive and started the parity rebuild with the first disk. After it finished I got a notice about a single error for both "Offline uncorrectable" and "Current pending sector".

I'm not sure if these specific errors can be caused by hardware, but for reference these are in a Supermicro 846 chassis. I ran the preclear in one slot, pulled one of the original parity disks, swapped it to the new drive and did the rebuild for the first disk.

I ran a short smart test which passed, but when doing an extended it stops at 10%, saying "Completed: read failure"

While typing this up, I just refreshed and notice both the values are at 2 now, but I have no reallocated sectors. Should I see about exchanging it, or just monitor the values? I have not rebooted yet in case I needed any logs. I was debating on starting the rebuild for the second drive and see if it has issues too but wanted to ask here about any next steps so I could RMA both at the same time in case both have problems.

Disk failed the SMART test so it should be replaced.

Thank you. I've never had a single smart error pop up before so I wanted to make sure it was actually failing.
