February 2, 201214 yr I got a old PC from a friend, cos he bought a new one. I discovered it was a 1st generation Core I7 on an Intel DX58SO with 6 GB DDR3 The Power Supply and Videocard were fried, so I borrowed a PSU and PCI-E videocard and the PC still boots up in Windows 7. It just finished a 24h Burn-in test. Will this motherboard, CPU and RAM be a good base for an Unraid server. It has an Intel NIC onboard, 6 Sata-ports and an eSata-port. It doesn't have many PCI-slots though, only one and 2 PCI-E 16x slots. It also has 2 PCI-E x1 and a PCI-E 4x slot Would it be advisable to put a PCI videocard on it? Or a PCI-e one (Nvidia GF 210, around 20 Euros) I could evt, use the remaining slots for SATA expansion. Any tips for a good card is welcome.

Get a PCI video card and use the one PCI slot for video. Then you can use the x16 slots for SATA expansion cards like the SASLP or m1015.
February 2, 201214 yr Author Thanks prostuff1. Do you have any recommendation for a 4 port SATA controller? Can this use a PCI-E x4 slot?
February 2, 201214 yr I did this with an old motherboard and it worked very well. I put the old motherboard in an Antec 300 case for better airflow and more expansion. I don't recommend the Antec 300 if you plan on maxing out unRAID though, it fills up fast and because of the design you can only use one drive cage (4x3, 5x3) without serious work. This caps the case at 12 internal drives (5 in a cage, 6 on the rails and a 2.5" mounted in the bottom).
February 2, 201214 yr I would just grab a SASLP. It fits in an x4 slot and will give you 8 SATA connections. If you dont need that many then your best bet is to probably read on the forums to see if you can find one. I don't know of any off the top of my head.
February 5, 201214 yr Author I decided to put the motherboard in the OP in my dektop PC, replacing an ASUS Maximus Formula with Intel E8400. Maybe this motherboard can be used for my server. It has an Intel X38 chipset, 4 GB RAM, 2 PCIe x16, 3 PCIe x1 and 2 PCI slots. It also has 6 SATA ports and 2 Gigabit Marvell Yukon LAN ports. I guess it will suffice. Would it be beneficial to put a Quabcore Q9550 instead of the E8400 on it? I like your thought on it please.
February 5, 201214 yr Author the E8400 is overkill as it is So was the core i7 from the OP. But I understand, I leave it as it is. Runs cooler too. Eventhough it might do some transcoding/converting with Airvideoserver and Plex installed.
