I have selected these components because they are rock solid. I want a build that will give me the least problems when assembling while giving more horepower than I currently need for future proofing. Only thing I do not have are cables and cache hard drive. I will be using 12 of my existing HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117) 2TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drives from my WHS to get me going and add more as needed.

Any recommendations on a cache drive and cables?

Looks like a nice machine to me.  Remember that if you every decide to do ESXi on this machine you will need to change the CPU as the i3 won't do pass-through.

Cache drive, get another 2TB drive so it can be a "warm spare" for a failed drive.  If you want it to be always very fast, use a 7200rpm one.

Cables, go to monoprice and get some 8087 forward breakout cables.

or consider the 4224 case and just use 8087 cables and 1 reverse-breakout cable to the motherboard.

On a side note: how have your Hitachi Deskstar drives been holding up?

Thanks for your feedback.

I am current running a WHS and it is getting expensive to mirror all the drives. I am not too familar with configuration of unRaid, but from what I read, it is solid, which is what I want. How do you configure the system for a cache drive. I want to get the best speed possible out of the system. I tend to move large files around a couple of time a week and am impatient.

As for your question about the hard drives. I have had zero issue with the hitachi drives. They have been rock solid. I bought the first set of 4 about year ago and no issues. I bought the second 4 about 6 months ago and no issues.
