August 29, 20241 yr Just looking for opinions! Tell me how terrible of an idea this is...lol I have 4 3.5" drives and a USB drive with a license from an old unraid server I had. I also have a desktop machine that recently had its OS drive fail and I'm thinking about virtualizing it. The drives won't fit in the machine, so how terrible of an idea would it be to get an external USB enclosure (maybe something like this) and adding the drives that way? Does unraid play nice with array drives being run over USB? I haven't tried it before. Edited August 29, 20241 yr by rmp5s
August 29, 20241 yr Author Yup...going this route. Kinda answered my own question. lol For anyone in the future considering going USB?...no need! Takes two SATA power inputs and has 4 SATA outs for the drives... AND it has a fan!! lol Awesome...USB drive to run unraid, this via SATA for my big, old 8TB drives, AND I can add all the other random 2.5" drives, m.2 drives, all that other random junk I have laying around too. Should be PERFECT!! A SATA enclosure, even if you gotta shuck your drives, is a MUCH better option!! 👍
