Frequent Kernel Panics and ATA Errors

Featured Replies

I’m experiencing frequent kernel panics and ATA errors on my Unraid server, and I need help diagnosing the root cause. Below are the details of my setup and the logs I’ve encountered:

System Details:

Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI DDR4 (MS-7E06)

BIOS Version: 1.70 (07/13/2023)

CPU: 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-13900K

Unraid Version: 6.12.4

Error Logs:

Kernel Panic and Invalid Opcode Errors:

Logs frequently show invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI related to the md_mod module (unraidd process).

Stack traces point to faults in md_mod during disk operations, causing the unraidd process to terminate unexpectedly.

I've seen repeated kernel warnings and call traces indicating abnormal process exits.

NVMe Drive Issues:

I/O timeouts and aborted commands on the NVMe drive (nvme1), specifically errors like nvme nvme1: I/O Cmd QID timeout, aborting.

These timeouts seem related to high disk utilization or potential hardware issues.

ATA Errors:

Logs show multiple ATA errors on ata3, including Emask 0x10 (ATA bus error) and irq_stat 0x08000000, interface fatal error.

Errors include failed write commands (WRITE FPDMA QUEUED) and repeated hard resets of the SATA link.

The drive on ata3 reconnects at 6.0 Gbps but the errors persist

Are these errors indicative of a failing drive, SATA controller issues, or possibly deeper kernel-related bugs? Is there some newer gen intel BS going on?

Having to do lots of unclean shutdowns, unfortunately. Some of my drives are reporting errors, I may just move out everything on Disk 2 and unplug it. I'm using hotswap bays so I'm gonna try plugging some of those drives in directly and see if I still have any problems.

Thanks in advance for reading into my issues, please let me know if I need to provide any more info or run any tests

These are almost always a hardware issue.

Maybe the Intel 13/14 stability issue?

Seems like I'm running into the same issue, did it end up being a bad drive? Or (i'm really hoping it isn't...) the Intel 13 instability?
