September 3, 20241 yr Deciding to take the plunge into the unraid rabbit hole and needed some advice on my first nas. The Nas(computer) is an Aoostar R1 with an intel100, (2) 2.5gb ports and wifi6, 1nvme slot (I have a 4tb evo 980) and (2) hdd bays...I only have one 4tb hdd at the moment. I'll be using the machine to backup my phones and computers, and hopefully sync to idrive. First question is: which filesystem should I use? Xfs, ZFS, or something different. 2nd: how should I configure my 4tb NVME drive and 4tb HDD? I want the hdd to mirror the nvme. Should I use it as a cache or Parity? I also have a separate enclosure that can turn my nvme into portable ssd...what if I bought a another hdd and made the nmve a portable cache drive? Or is that not something I should do? 3rd: What is a recommended app for synching my files from my phone to unraid? 4th: can I make the unraid array show up a DAS drive in one of my computers instead of a share incase I wanted to edit videos from it? I know that's tons of questions, but even if only 1 gets answered, I'll still be grateful.
September 3, 20241 yr Xfs for array drives. Btrs or zfs for cache drives. Trim function does not work in array. Keep nvme and ssds as cache pools. Use the nvme as cache to your hdd. Mirroring them would slow it all down to hdd speeds. If this is only a back up machine, maybe skip the nvme and get 2nd hdd and set it up as a single parity with one array drive. (Note parity drive needs to be same or larger than array drives.). I have no opinion on using the SSD externally. Dunno You can setup shares accessible to your network. Unsure if that answers that one. Theres alot to play with in unraid and I am far from an expert. My go-to for info is spaceinvaderone 9n YouTube. https://m.youtube.com/@SpaceinvaderOne Good luck with the new adventure. Edited September 3, 20241 yr by Veah
September 4, 20241 yr Author Thanks So you're saying in your example that a 2nd hdd mirrored would be the best setup as a backup solution and to repurpose the NVME since the nvme would have to be throttled anyway?
September 4, 20241 yr Yes Edit: the 2nd drive not 'mirrored' but rather, 1 hdd for array and 1 hdd for parity. Edited September 4, 20241 yr by Veah
September 4, 20241 yr If you have not spent $ yet, you should try the trial. I think it's 30 days you get to mess around.
