Will Unraid benefit from a RAID-controller? If so, when and how?

    There is a small benefit from using an Areca Arc-1200 PCIe x1 for a combined RAID0/parity and RAID1/Cache.

     

    There are many conversations on the benefit of this controller.

    Sometimes you can score it on eBay for approx $100.

    As Weebo indicated, there can be a performance benefit in certain cases, especially with a cache drive.  However, adding any amount of hardware RAID into the mix will complicate your data recovery options.  I personally prefer a slower server that offers easy data recovery in a catastrophe.
