February 9, 201214 yr As the subject suggests, I'm new and have questions. I have been running a media server for a few years now but its only been the main htpc loaded down with harddrives and being shared to the other computers in the house. This isn't ideal and I'm ready to make the move to a dedicated server. I'll probably go with greenleaf's budget build with the rosewill box and basically all the specs listed. Will the Sempron 145 be enough for Sab/Sick/Couch running alongside streaming to atleast one client? All transcoding will be done on the htpc of course. Is 2GB ram enough, or should I go ahead and throw 4GB in it? The server will be primarily for serving movies, tv shows and music, but will also be used for periodical backups of important data. Me and my wife both read avidly, so we have our own calibre servers up and running. Has anyone attempted this on unraid? EDIT: I thought to search that one(I usually do search first I swear!) and found the answer. I'm sure there are other questions I'm just not thinking of at the moment. I"m looking forward to my UNraid experience!
February 9, 201214 yr The Sempron 145 will do SABnzbd, SickBeard, and CouchPotato just fine. The par repairs for SABnzb files might be a little slower but that is not a huge deal. I set up SABnzbd on a HP Microserver and that runs an AMD Turion at 1.5GHz. Good luck with the build and welcome to the club!!
February 9, 201214 yr Yup no problems with the Sempron. I use a DS-210j/Marvell Kirkwood mv6281 800Mhz ARM Processor for Sab/Sick/Couch. Repairs are less than an hour; also they occur relatively infrequently.
February 10, 201214 yr Author Thanks, not so much worried about many repairs as unraring in general, typically atleast 2GB a night to unrar, I've never had a problem out of my dual core doing it, I barely notice it really, just didn't know if it'd be much different with the Sempron. One of the main reasons I'm moving to unraid(aside from the protection I'm currently not getting) is the user shares. I have a 5 year old that has his own pc and have a frontend setup so he can watch his shows, but of course being a kid he found how to get to the drive itself and goes to his shows that way most of the time, and ends up moving movies into different folders, renaming them, and occasionally deleting them(though not often). My wife doesn't mess with it but I would like the ease of mind knowing that only I have access to move/rename/delete things, that way I know its being done how I like it. Yes, I am a OCD freak with computer files. Using Windows worked well when it was only one drive and one htpc, but now that I've expanded the network, it can be a pain to get the permissions right for everyone, and sometimes it just stops working. Unraid seems like it would be an excellent answer to these problems. Anyone have suggestions on the Ram?
February 10, 201214 yr unRAID can run on 1G or less, but RAM is cheap...4GB or more. Helps with preclear times based on Raj's test. DDR3 if your MB is compatible. http://www.greenleaf-technology.com/blogs/softwareandhardware/index.php?id=7670470456310216397
