Are you sure the warranty would be void? I don't know about the warranty status of refurb stuff but but I bought a new external 3TB WD drive a few months back and removed it from the enclosure. I just checked the warranty status on the WD website with the serial number printed on the actual drive and it says it's got the two year warranty.

    I'm not 100% sure, but I wouldn't bet on having a warranty after removing from the enclosure.  Still, you might get lucky, as it sounds like you did.
