February 19, 201214 yr Apologies if this has been covered before. I currently have a HP MediaSmart Server(one of the first ones) running WHS. I recently capped out on space, and will soon be in the market to upgrade my NAS status. unRaid "seems" like a winner, but I wanted to inquire directly about this. I'm looking for a really hands off contraption with high reliability. I store digital data, as well as run my TV shows and Movies off of the NAS. Does unRaid run well(reliable, fast etc..) with very little maintenance? Thanks!

February 19, 201214 yr It's not as hands-off as some of the storage boxes. You do need to either do regular checks on the disk status or install an add-on which provides email notifications. You might also be wise to do more troubleshooting than just a disk swap if you do have an issue. Overall though, a properly built and setup server should run very reliably and require little maintenance. Peter
February 29, 201214 yr A bit of a late answer... coming from a WHS myself, I find that once you get unRAID set up. it is about the same or less hands on as WHS. if you ad the monitoring tools and email options. it is even less so. it take a bit more work to get set up the first time. but once you get over the hump, it is all downhill. if you start adding stuff like sab, san , couch and transcoding stuff. it will become more hands on.. I just recommend that you use stable tested hardware, SOHO grade or better if you can afford it. perhaps supermicro (or similar) boards. Personally, I think WHS and unRAID are a nice home/home office combo., use the unraid for the heavy bulk storage and WHS for PC backups. If i were you and chose unRAID, i would keep the MSS running with only one or 2 drives in it for backups, possibly remote access and any plug-in you might have picked up.
March 3, 201214 yr I am also coming from a WHS system and am very happy with it. I am using Genie timeline on the pc's and I use unraid as the storage facility to store the backups so I am not using the WHS at all any more. One thing I am missing is a torrent client (without using bubbaraid, I am not comfortable enough starting to use that), so I am running that from my pc at the moment.

There's a transmission package for unRAID. Don't use bubbaraid, it is obsolete by this point.

It will install just fine and run... but it disrupts some of the libraries on 4.7
