SuperMicro H8DME-2 Dual 6 Core Opteron?

Featured Replies

woah, took my eye off this thread for a short while and came back to a real roller coaster of excitement!  It doesn't work!  It does work!  It doesn't work ;D

oh well... i guess i'll try and return the two i bought...anyone have any other suggestions on what to do with them?  i guess its possible but highly unlikely that one of us might have a 2.01A board, while others have 2.01?

Im fairly certain we all have the same boards.

After going through 3 DVD drives (2 IDE and 1 SATA) , 3 USB sticks, I finally was able to boot into Windows to install and flash the firmware on these devices. Looks like I'm working late tonite!

for those of you needing winderz drivers for these RAID cards:

I know on mine I have to go into the bios -> boot and select hard drives. Under there for some reason is where its puts everything. My USB drive was like number 7 or 8 on the list. Make it number 1 and then go to boot priority and you can then pick the USB as the first boot drive. It was confusing, but it worked.

I did that, and I hit F11 for Boot Manager to double force the sucker to use that drive. Nothing worked, not even when I used an additional PS/2 KB (finding that one was fun).

I got a glimpse of what the system was trying to boot into each time: IPMI card. I believe if I would have removed that IPMI card I would have had less problems.  I can't wait for the real one to get in so I can do proper KVM on this monster.

Supermicro sucks. The Windows EXE just creates a bootable floppy. @#!$%#@$%!!!!!

More good news: 1.0b is the latest firmware for these SAT2-MW8 systems. Only thing I need to do now is update the BIOS on the MB and start the installation of drives. What a PIA.

Any time the power is completely removed from the server for an extended period of time, when you first boot it up it initializes the IPMI card. It takes about 60 seconds and then reboots again. Is that what you're talking about? You can't do anything until it reboots after the IPMI card is initialized. Are you getting the full screen supermicro logo or are you seeing actual POST information? You may see things different than me though as I have a kb and monitor hooked directly in and it sounds like you might be connected remotely? I havent had any issues whatsoever and I have had it boot from 3 different flash drives. One to update the bios, one that has my unRAID install, and one with esxi on it to play around a bit.

I went and got a 2GB USB drive from the store. Brand new in the box and guess what? It works. I flashed the bios, now at 3.5A and life is good.

Now to hunt down some hard drives and CPUs.

@Tragik: I was doing everything locally. Nothing remote.  I gave up remote when I couldn't view what was going on via the web browser.  The management on this system is good upto a point: You can reboot a server remotely. UNRaid doesn't ever need to be rebooted. It just works.

Ah well. Time to grab a glass of Jack Daniels after today.

CPU Upgrades:

My dual 6 cores came in and back out they go. Won't work, no biggy.

Found a pair of quad Shanghai(45nm) for $25/each:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-OPTERON-QC-PROCESSOR-2380-2-50GHZ-OS2380WAL4DGI-/200724327075?pt=CPUs&hash=item2ebc1a2aa3#ht_2620wt_1398

These are midrange and a damn fine lot of CPUs for the price.  I'll be picking up a pair to shove into this server.  They are Hyperthreading aware so this 8 cores becomes 16.  Fantastic.

I think you are getting hyper-transport and hyperthreading confused.  As far as i know hyperthreading is a Intel only thing.  Hyper-transport is just the bus between the cpu and the system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperTransport

You tried them then... BUMMER!!

I guess I won't even bother unboxing mine when they get here then  :(

Are you confusing  Hyper THRED & Hyper TRANSPORT...?

Here are part of the specs for those processors:

Microarchitecture K10

Processor core  ?  Shanghai

Core stepping  ?  C2

Manufacturing process 0.045 micron

Data width 64 bit

The number of cores 4

The number of threads 4

Im not that familiar with amd vs intel chips. I assumed HT was hypertheeading. I did not install the chips in this server so i cannot say for  100% certain they will fail.

Feel free to try though. Im waiting for my rma still.

I'm tending to believe Super Micro on this one vs some unknown user. I haven't installed mine nor tried to install it. I'm sticking with what work so I don't have to keep cracking off the HSF on this sucker.

Thats too bad...  :P

You bring empirical proof....there is hope...

Did you get into UNRaid without issue?? I Might have to keep mine after all! 1CPU or 2?

Im only using 1 CPU and it booted into unraid with zero issues. Working like a champ right now.

Got my new IPMI card in with dedicated LAN connection. Unfortunately the password is not the standard/default so off to do the 10-15 ways to reset the password.

Reset the password, that was a pain. The remote KVM features of this IPMI card are a god send.

Installing FreeNAS on this sucker now.  I know, I know. Wrong forum/OS, blah blah blah. forgive me  ::)

Trajik that's awesome!  i don't have to return my new cpu's!

did you flash the mobo using the link that bigdaddy posted back on page 2, or did you have to do anything else to get it working?

i'm going to try to get two of these working... guess i'll need to find another heat sink... i'm hoping that since i'll have to pop the heatsink off the existing cpu, i can then take it to a local store to find a similar one (i haven't confirmed yet that the sockets are the same).

He is using the same bios as me. You are looking for a socket 1207 amd heatsink/fan. Quiet ones are 60$+.  Cheap ones are $35.

Im picking up some artic silver and tommorow ill be putting in the other cpu to test.

Thanks big daddy. Look forward to hearing about your results!

Ps I assume the existing heat sink fan will also work with the six core CPU?  Or do I need to buy two?

hi gang, just received my unit today!  looks to be in good condition however i'm unable to boot up because... there's no power cords!

did other's receive power cords?  are they inside the unit somewhere?  am i blind?  how were your's packaged?

Thats a bummer. Mine had 3 power cords included. If they were there you couldn't miss them, they were brand new and individually packaged. The good news is you should be able to get them locally fairly cheap. Its just a standard C13 to 3 prong same as any other PC.

Thanks big daddy. Look forward to hearing about your results!

Existing HSF combo will work, there's no difference from one to the other. Get some good artic silverish material and goto town.

Power Cords: These are standard power cords, there is nothing special about them. Any computer store (Best Buy, CompUSA, Staples, Home Depot!)  will have them. I have HUNDREDS lying around the shop and I had to thin the herd some and toss them all out.

No power cords here either  :(  Had a few on hand, so not a big deal...

The packing left alot to be desired... airbags were not meant to pack something that heavy!! There were only 2 of the 15 or so left unpopped >:(

I had to do a little work to the right side so the trays slide easily. Other than that... it's OK.

Booted into unRAID with no problems... working great!!

It is LOUD though!!... off to the basement with it.... ;)

Thanks guys. Sounds like cables were a bit random. Technically I didn't see them in the pics so I guess if you got them its a bonus

I was able to scrounge some up this am in my discard bin

Was able to boot up no prob!  I couldnt get it to boot from USB though. But I didn't have the USB attached so maybe that was the prob

Won't have much time till Friday to play more

Hopefully I'll be installing my second CPU then right big daddy?

As soon as you find a second HeatSinkFan combo Grither you are good to go!  ;D
