rjs104 Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Hi, I'm new to the Unraid world. I have one "new" 12TB drive I bought off a retailer on Ebay in "never used" condition, and twice now I've seen the thumbs down icon on the Unraid Dashboard. When I click on the drive in question (Disk 2 - sdd) - and show the SMART error log it says "No Errors Logged". SMART self-test history shows 1 short offline test "Completed without error" and the LifeTIme (hours) 132 - which is probably roughly what its been in my server. Previously I acknowledged the smart error and waited to see if it happened again - which it has, which now causes me to be here to ask questions! Should I be concerned? It seems like its a phantom error as no Smart errors have been logged? Attached is the drive SMART report which might show something to you clever people! Thank you for any insight you can offer. rjs104 Posted October 17 Author Posted October 17 Hi ChatNoir, Many thanks for your speedy response. The extended self test came up with "read failure" which no doubt confirms your suspicions. I've contacted the vendor - fingers crossed for a positive outcome! Rx Quote
rjs104 Posted October 17 Author Posted October 17 To follow up, what is the significance of the error presented (to a layman!)? Should I abandon the drive at the earliest possible time, or might it limp on until I can get a replacement in the next week or so? What is the expected prognosis of a patient in this state?! Wody Posted October 18 Posted October 18 11 hours ago, rjs104 said: To follow up, what is the significance of the error presented (to a layman!)? Every drive has platters in them, where the data is stored. These platters often contain defects, and the drive normally would detect these bad areas, stop using them, and instead use some of the spare space reserved for the purpose instead. This normally happens automatically, and you wouldn't notice it happening, until this spare space runs out. So, the fact that the drive can't be read, and tells you, means that there is something seriously wrong with it, and the entire drive should not be used anymore, and should be replaced as soon as possible. What I would do, is stop using the drive, move any data on it to other drives, and remove it from the array once empty. Quote
rjs104 Posted October 18 Author Posted October 18 Thank you for the clear explanation. All good. I'm working on clearing it now - the vendor has been helpful and is offering to replace it, so no complaints there. Rx Quote
