February 26, 201214 yr Hello - Up until yesterday, I've been running 4.7 Basic with 1 2TB parity drive and 1 2TB data drive. Yesterday I added a plus license and 4 more drives - 1 2TB, 1 500G, 1 640G, and 1 500G cache. They had been precleared and added to the array without issue. I thought I'd do a parity check before anything else, and about 5 minutes into the check, I lost access to the server. A visit to the console had the attached error. I rebooted, and the automatic parity check (since the array hadn't been shut down right) did the same thing. So I've cancelled the automatic parity check and I'm just holding my breath for now. I don't even know where to start? I tried to look at the syslog, but it only seemed to be there from the most recent boot - nothing prior. I was thinking I'd remove several of the disks and parity check one at a time, but there has to be another way. And I'm not sure what would happen if I remove all the disks anyway. I'd appreciate any tips or pointers in the right direction.
February 27, 201214 yr Author So after I posted this, I saw a recent similar thread. I've run a long smart test on all of the new drives, and I don't see anything out of place. I can post the logs if somebody wants to see them. hardware specs: MB - BIOSTAR A870U3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138318 CPU - AMD Athlon II X2 260 Regor 3.2GHz - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103873 RAM - Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104221 PSU - Corsair CX600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028 Parity - HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 disk 1 - WD wd20ears newly added disks: disk 2 - seagate st2000dl003 disk 3 - WD wd5000aacs disk 4 - WD wd6400aads disk 5 (cache) - wd5000aads any tips?
February 27, 201214 yr Author So based on the "other" parity freeze thread, it looks like I should try a parity check with each of the new disks individually instead of all at once. Am I correct that if I remove the disks from the array, I'll have to pre-clear them again before adding them back?
February 27, 201214 yr So based on the "other" parity freeze thread, it looks like I should try a parity check with each of the new disks individually instead of all at once. That is not possible Am I correct that if I remove the disks from the array, I'll have to pre-clear them again before adding them back? Also not true... If you set a new disk configuration, the old data stays.. (but you immediately lose any prior parity calculation, so it must be re-calculated)
February 27, 201214 yr Author I know I can't pick what drives to parity check - what I mean is - remove 3 of the 4 "new" disks from the array, then run parity. Rinse & repeat for each of the 4 new drives. So my parity checks would be a long sequence of existing parity, existing drive1, new drive2 existing parity, existing drive1, new drive3 existing parity, existing drive1, new drive4 existing parity, existing drive1, new cache drive They new drives are all showing empty in unmenu - so there's no data to save. Do you think this sequence is a worthwhile endeavor? Can I remove 3 (empty) drives and start the array without them to try this? Does it matter at all that the existing drives are not 4k aligned, but the new drives are?

February 27, 201214 yr Alignment does not matter. You can try testing the way you mention. I would run tests with 5 drives and try to build and then check parity. Each test remove a different drive.
February 28, 201214 yr That depends on the version: 4.7: enter "initconfig" 5.0: Click on "New Config" under Util
February 28, 201214 yr Author 4.7, fwiw.. To confirm - that won't erase any data on the "real" disk1, right? It'll just re-do the parity drive?
