Second parity drive to be used as data

Featured Replies

Does a drive that is used as a second parity drive need to precleared before using it as a data drive in an array?

No, preclearing is always optional, but it will need to be cleared by Unraid before it can be used.

Meaning formatted? I understand it needs to be formatted. I just didn't know if it needed to be completely cleared.

No - Cleared (every sector set to all zeroes).  A disk has to be all zeroes before it can be added as an array drive without affecting parity.   Formatting happens after the add has succeeded.   Unraid does the Clear automatically when it is needed.

I learn something new all the time. I didn't know Unraid did this automatically.  So the same is true for a data drive being reused as a new drive I assume.
