Wireguard Access over Cell Hotspot

Featured Replies

I am setup and working mostly as expected. I am having some issues with remote access over my mobile hotspot.

From my house I can connect to home wifi and access unraid GUI locally no issues

When at a remote wifi location I can connect to wireguard and access unraid GUI no problem

When at a remote location I can connect to wireguard on my phone and access unraid GUI on my phone itself

When at a remote location if I connect my laptop to my phone hotspot, connect the laptop to wireguard (it says its connected) I am unable to access the unraid GUI. I can ping the server, and seem to be intermittently able to get SOME access to some of my other docker apps, but no GUI access for some reason.

What might cause this? I dont have any docker containers using port 80... cant seem to find a fix.

Thanks in advance

-Matt

WireGuard is making the tunnel on the phone and is not forwarding traffic on the phone through the phone network. Any client device you have will need to run WireGuard and connect to the tunnel.

Here is the issues... Your tunnel exists, but traffic is not being router through it. As example if I open putty ssh terminal and connect to a server (as putty can make tunnels..) just because there is a session doesn't mean that all my traffic is now going over that session...

Solution... Install WireGuard on the remote client device and connect to your WireGuard instance. Further, check WireGuard allowed IP for subnet traffic routing.

I am using the wireguard client on my laptop and only using the cell phone for internet access (wifi hotspot)

I have also confirmed that my IP given by wireguard is correct and within my DHCP range.

Wireguard works fine on my laptop when using any internet connection OTHER than my cell hotspot.

Just becaue wiregurad claims theres a connection doen't mean the tunnel is formed. your wifi cel hostpot may be droping or blocking the traffic. (Some providers will not allow it on there network due to the bandwaith limitation)

on the wiregurad sever you need to confirm the connection check the logs...

What confuses me is all the parts of this puzzle work separately - just not together.

Wireguard works on my laptop I can see the connection being made and I can gain full access using my works wifi + laptop + wireguard

Wireguard works on my cellphone I can see the connection being made and I can gain full access using cell network + phone + wireguard

Also works using wifi + phone + wireguard

Just doesnt work using cell network + laptop + wireguard

I understand this is a routing issue with my cell phone hotspot - I was just looking to see if there was anyone else who had run into it or was able to resolve it. There are no advanced settings available to change within the wifi hotspot settings on my Pixel 8.

I was wondering if it was IPV6 vs IPV4 issue but disabling IPV6 didnt seem to solve my issues.

Who's the Cell Provider? as it may be other proxy related issues.

You can try a vpn borkage system as a test.

Both are free... Tailscale uses WireGuard underneath ...
tailscale and twingate
Both are free with upto 3 users and ?atleast 5 or more devices...

I would Recommend tailscale for a test... seeing as Unraid recenlty partnered with them...

tailscale:
Make a tailscale account:
https://login.tailscale.com/admin/machines
install unraid plugin.

install the app on phone.
remote device install and connect:
https://tailscale.com/download/windows

or Try Twingate:
Make free account: https://auth.twingate.com/signup-v2
install unraid twingate docker form comunity app store
add the auth and login to docker
install twingate on phone/remote device...
https://www.twingate.com/download

I am using Google Fi. When I use my phone with wireguard I can use the cell network to remotely access my server though, so I don't think it's related to the cell network im using it seems to be specifically some routing that happens for hotspot devices.

I will try your other suggestions tomorrow and let you know if I see any changes. Thanks for your help.

I didn't "fix" the issue but I did find a workaround. My router supports OpenVPN so I set that up as a server and connected and it works fine. I can use my remote wifi connection, or my cell hotspot and I am able to connect to my network and do everything I need.
