October 30, 20241 yr I'm having a weird issue with my server. All but 2 of my drives are SATA, but I do have the SAS-Spindown addon installed for the other 2 drives. The drives just aren't spinning down - period. I did a manual spin-down and they instantly spun back up for a SMART check. I waited about 5 minutes and did the spin-down again. EXACT same - instant SMART check. I looked in the logs and since 01:00 today, zero spin-downs or SMART checks until I did the 2 manual spin-downs. I'm running v6.12.13, with the spin-down delay set to 15 minutes. October 30, 20241 yr Author Just now, Kilrah said: Any time a drive spins up a SMART check is done so it's a consequence, not a cause. You have to look for things using the drives. There's zero activity on any of the 13 drives in the array. The only activity is on one of the pools.
October 30, 20241 yr Community Expert Also you seem to have mover running every hour, doesn't make much sense if you want drives to spin down. Provide diagnostics since we don't even know what kind of setup these drives are in.

November 2, 20241 yr Hi Malaki86, Were you able to find a solution? I'm having a similar issue. I believe i have my mover is set to once a week. I tried changing my polling to 86400. I have a brand new install. I installed the mover plugin that's it. I put everything to the cache drive. But I tried powering down the array. It stayed powered down for 2-3 mins then all 12 drives spin back up. I have this issue with ver 6, and also downloaded the beta 7 to try. any advice on how to get the drives to spin down for extended period of time would be great. Maybe I am trying out the wrong software and unraid cant do this. I'm testing with a couple 1tb ssd. My hope\goal was to install 2 or 3, 4tb nvmes for my media library (data) cache. Every week use mover to move stuff older then 7 days to the array. If something is needed, it would spin up the data from the drives. my server drops from appx 210watts to closed to 100watts when the 12 drives spin down. Seem this would be great long term. thank you all for any suggestions. tower-syslog-20241102-1733.zip
November 2, 20241 yr Community Expert @Lou2k7 if you have a drive controller card in there, check to disable all of its power related settings. Those cause conflicts with Unraid drive power settings.
November 3, 20241 yr Hello again all, Looking for power settings to change to allow hard drive spin down. I'm using a dl380 gen9 12lff. P840 controller in hba mode. 12 sata drives. updated everything with the latest SPP for this model. I've been playing with power settings everyplace i can find. The drive will spin down, but within a 2-3mins they spin back up. I'm as a loss on what setting(s) to change to allow the drives to stay spun down for an extended period of time. Hoping someone else with a dl380 gen9 might be able to share if they had this issue. thank you
November 4, 20241 yr Community Expert Found something peculiar while testing and I am not sure how to explain it. While running some ARRs and Nzbget, I have a single disk that continuously spins up and writes a couple hundred KB data every ew minutes while the rest remain spun down. This thread made me look closely because it started to bother me. I (tried 100 random things then) went through the containers settings (gui) under 'Show more settings...' and changed the Appdata path from </mnt/user/appdata/nzbget/> to </mnt/NVMEDRIVENAME/appdata/nzbget/> and now ALL my HDDs are staying spun down. I'm at 30 min now with Radarr, Sonarr, Lidarr, Hydra2 going, as well as Nzbget actively downloading linux distros. My problem drive is sleeping soundly. If someone can help this make sense to me, I would appreciate it.

You are likely to get more informed feedback if you attach your system's diagnostics zip file to your next post in this thread. It is always a good idea to do this to allow us to see the current state of your system and so we can see logs.
