Please recommend a drive setup for a new unraid 7 build

Featured Replies

Hi all

New to unraid and planning a from scratch setup on a bare metal system, Im moving away from truenas scale after dealing with some hard to track down hardware compatabilty issues and looking for advice on how to use the drives.

It will be generally used for a secondary media server with large transfers to the system once a week in the vicinity of 200-400gb per transfer.

Currently running

4x 3tb wd red's in a raidz1

3x 2tb wd reds in a raidz1

1x 1tb nvme

1x 2tb nvme

1x 3tb seagate drive single

1x 4tb drive wd red single

if i understand the unraid 7 possiblities would the following setup be approximately ideal

4x 3tb wd reds in raidz1

3x 2tb + 1x 3tb in a unraid

1x 4tb as parity

1x1tb nvme as cache

1x2tb nvme as individual whatever drive

any thoughts on layout would be appreciated, this system once runng well will eventually become my main server for everything at home.

kind regards

Scott

It all comes down to how you want to interact with it and what you want it to do. Do you plan to use stable 6 or use beta 7... or is this when 7 is in full release?

correct, you can set the array to none. You can move and backup data to existing pools. Go to tool > click new *(SAVE YOUR POOL CONFIGURATION!) and set array to none. then setup a pool only aray of disk. Due to default tempales and other known set paths I would still recommend atleast 1 disk (ideal2) as a cache disk in a btrfs mirror for docker app data to continue using apps without much hassle...

if you have 4 of the same capity drive ideally you would want a raidz2 to have the abilty to lose 2 disk without the loss of data. this mirror, parity and raids 0 the 4 disk for speed data and security.

Since they are already raidz1 it is hard to migrate unless you ahve the space.

Rember It all comes down to how you want to interact with it and what you want it to do. My recommendation and example option:

with this hardware:

4x 3tb wd red's in a raidz1

3x 2tb wd reds in a raidz1

1x 1tb nvme

1x 2tb nvme

1x 3tb seagate drive single

1x 4tb drive wd red single

Keep them or updagred / increaes them...

4x 3tb wd red's in a raidz1

3x 2tb wd reds in a raidz1

zfs raidz1

unless you want to make a vm with a nvme disk passed via vfio bind. I would setup the 1x1TB nvme and 1x2TB nvme as the cache...
(in which case make sure the nvme is in the top slot next to the Gcard if you chose to do that as a vm HD for windows / linux....)

This leaves a setup a with single disk pool 1x 4tb drive wd red single as Backup or location to store data between things for the 321 backup rule...

Choices.. You can turn your
4x 3tb wd red's in a raidz1 into a 5x 3tb raidz2 (this would require wipeing the data on the previous array...)

3x 2TB in raidz1 (could also add nvme here and make a 4x2TB raidz2)
Unraid Cachedisk as btrfs either the btrfs mirro withthe 1 and 2 TB (later uprade the 1 nvme to a 2TB to increase stroage)
or keep it as the 1x 1TB for temp docekr stroage and use plugins to copy the data / backup the data off the nveme drive...

Ideally I would have:
5x 3TB zfs raidz2 (for xzy data)

4x 2TB raidz2 (for xyz data)

1x 1TB nvme (either passthough vm or Chache disk (docker data installed here)
1x 4TB to copy data to and from as a backup XFS fiel format for simple linux pul and read to recover data...

Recommend as to keep raidz1 as its fine...

4x 3tb wd red's in a raidz1

3x 2tb wd reds in a raidz1
2x (1tb nvme 2TB nvme) as btrfs mirro for unraid cachedisk

Keep the 3tb in the sytem put unplud it for a spare for the raidz1
add a single disk pool 1x4TB as a xfs for backups and staroage between the 2 arrays
