Hermes v2 - My budget Norco 4224 Core i3 build

Featured Replies

Hi! first time poster.

Starting this build was heavily influenced by Johnm's Goliath (Thanks for making good forum reading materials!). If anyone has suggestions for apps or what I could also do I'd be happy to hear it! I love tinkering with the cutting edge stuff and apps that make things faster or interesting.

Just want to note that if I didn't cheap out on a low-power i3 2100 and went with a Xeon chip I'd have been happily passing through the BR10i cards and making the most of what I got... Good thing is with the i3, its power draw is lower than a Xeon would have been.

Parts (Canada prices/availability):

2x glcomp.com: $146.91 w/ shipping - IBM System X ServeRAID BR10i SAS/SATA Controller

Newegg.ca: $430 - NORCO RPC-4224 4U Rackmount Server Case

Replaced all the fans in the Norco 4224 with the Noctua models and noticed it was extremely quiet compared to what I was expecting. Just be sure to use the rubber mounts and not the metal screws on all 5 fans.

The BR10i's f/w upon delivery: 1.30.00.00-IR & 1.27.88.00-IR. Upgraded to current IT mode file here using Win 7x64 with one card being attached at a time running the included scripts: See here for f/w LSI Controller FW updates IR/IT modes. BR10i's aren't supported on the latest beta 14a. Using "beta 12a".

I will be gradually moving the 8x 2TB drives off of my WHS server and putting them into this starting with a fresh 2TB I picked up at Staples for $120 at the time.

Current loaded apps:

unmenu (useful for installing other apps)

simplefeatures (awesome GUI!)

unraid-web (uninstalling as it is unneeded)

preclear_disk - No more playing roulette with my drives! (tests HDD fully for errors and adds note to unraid view with result... a 2TB could take some 25 hours to finish)
