Redistributing files over disks in a user share [SOLVED]

Featured Replies

Hi,

Before moving all my data to unraid from my WHS I created a number of User shares that now hold my data. I am very happy with unraid (4.7) performance.

However I now notice that whenever I start Itunes allmost every disk spins up, this is the result of the moment I moved this data to the system (at a moment a lot of drives where equally full) and the split level of 2.

I now realise that my "Music" user share needs a high splitlevel value to keep the files somewhat more together, I have therefor changed the splitlevel to "8". This will make sure more data will remain on one drive in the end.

However at the moment I am stuck with my data distributed over all drives. What is the best way for me to redistribute the files ? Is there maybe (this would be nicest) an addon that can perform this ?  If not, what route should I take ?

No addon to do this at this point in time.

Your only options are to move the files around on the network by moving them from one disk share to another disk share.  and the other is to log into the unRAID machine via telnet and us midnight commander (type mc on the command line) and use that to move files around from disk to disk.

You could also use cp or mv to move the files but it is very much command line and does nor offer a GUI.

Thanks for the info... To avoid doing manual disk copies... If I create a temporary share, move the data to it and then move it back to the MUSIC share (that now has split level 8) that will make sure the files mostly end up on one disk right ?  I could also use the "include disk" to include only one disk in the MUSIC share, right ?

Your understanding of split level is very wrong. A higher number means more splitting is allowed. Take a look at the unofficial manual in the Wiki if you haven't yet.

I would suggest you assign the music share to a single disk by using the include disk field. Use "disk3" to only use disk3 for example. You could change this to "disk4" later down the road and the new files would only use disk4 but the music already on disk3 would still be part of the share and you can still access it.
