Considering Upgrade to V5?

Featured Replies

I am a 8 month user of unRAID v4.7, and am at a point where I am considering upgrading to V5.0, simply for 3.0 TB drive support.  Before I buy any more drives, I think I would prefer to start getting 3 TB drives to maintain a higher long term capacity.

I would not call myself Linux proficient, but with this forum and a little guidance have done ok and really have had minimal issues.  I am comfortable with command prompt work, just have to educate myself (or ask for guidance here) with any new steps.

I don't use tons of add ons, just base 4.7, unMENU, with most of it's available plug in's such as UPS manager etc...  The only add on outside of what works with unMeNU is SNAP, and it's not actually in use at the moment, but would want similar functionality.

So my question is, based on my use and the hardware list in my signature (it is current) is V.5 stable enough for me to make this attempt, or should I leave well enough alone?  If so, what is the most stable of the recent beta's for me to make the attempt with?  Are there any known driver issues with my hardware and V5?

If I do, can I make an exact copy of everything on my current flash, and if I run into significant trouble, copy it back over and have it come up functionally? (IE not have to start over from scratch Nd rebuild parity?)  Seems like that should work.  I do understand the risks of Beta software and that is why I am asking.

Just looking for any advice from experienced V5 users.

Thanks.

Any advice?  V5 users?

I upgraded to beta 13 the day Plex was released for it and I have had no issues/regets what so ever.  I find version 5 REALLY elevates the products look/feel.

There are always risks to going into a Beta but I felt comfortable with upgrading.

The plugin system alone makes it a great leap forward and I would HIGHLY recomment the SimpleFeatures plugin.

Thanks, that's good to hear.

Can anyone comment on how easy it is to rollback in the event of a major issue?  IE does my idea of creating a copy of the flash as it stands now and being able to put it all back actually work?  I keep an accurate drive map so not worried about getting drive assignments right.

Also I see comments about hardware /driver issues, but hard to tell if there are real known driver issues.  Can any comment if my hardware is known to work, or not work?

I absolutely concur with this. I upgraded so that I could utilize my BR10i controllers which have now been replaced with M1015's within ESXi along with the ability to use 3TB drives. I have since then replaced all of my drives with WD 3TB versions (8 drives total) and have been happily chugging along.

I too HIGHLY recommend the SimpleFeatures plugin/skin. It completely changes the look/feel of the UnRaid interface and really rounds out and polishes the entire experience.
