March 6, 201214 yr I just picked up a couple new Seagate Barracuda 1TB drives at BBuy.. since the price dropped. Put one in the single drive Monoprice Hot Swap Drive cage to Preclear it and noticed the Activity light (the orange one) stays on except when accessed. I though the drive was bad but everything seemed normal except for the light so I put in the next one and the same thing. I put a one year old drive but never used in and it was normal, the light is off except when accessed. Could this be an "IMPROVEMENT" by Seagate? The Drive firmware seems up to date. It's just that it's the opposite of all my other drives. Is this the new Normal?
March 6, 201214 yr Author Yes, I understand that I can unplug the light. I like the way it works with previous drives, coming on with drive activity. But the new drives have it the opposite way, on all the time and blinking off with activity. Just was wondering it there was a change in the way the new drives work with it.
March 7, 201214 yr Sorry, but I don't know if there is a way to change it. I've never seen what you are seeing exactly, but I have seen certain drives that constantly activate the HDD light regardless of drive activity. Maybe it is a related problem. I typically disconnect all HDD lights because I think they are a waste of power. If I really want to see my drive activity, I'll check the unRAID main page. That's just my personal preference - I like to keep blinking lights to a minimum.
March 9, 201214 yr i'm having the same issue with a seagate (ST2000DM001) 2tb 7200 rpm parity drive. I've installed it in a supermicro 5in3 cage and the activity light is always lit. Not sure how to fix it either.

June 24, 201214 yr i'm having the same issue with a seagate (ST2000DM001) 2tb 7200 rpm parity drive. I've installed it in a supermicro 5in3 cage and the activity light is always lit. Not sure how to fix it either. I had the same condition on 3 of my ST2000DM001 drives. Updating them from the firmware they shipped with (CC4C) to CC4H fixed the issue. The activity led on the trays now function correctly. The newer firmware and instructions are available Here
August 12, 201213 yr Same problem here. I tried upgrading my firmware, but my Seagate ST2000DM001 shipped with Firmware- CC9C and the updater said "Model matched, but firmware not compatible"
August 13, 201213 yr Same problem here. I tried upgrading my firmware, but my Seagate ST2000DM001 shipped with Firmware- CC9C and the updater said "Model matched, but firmware not compatible" I think that firmware means it's from an external case like mine are and the activity led is hard on unless it it being used then it flashes. I have not found a way to flash it.
