March 6, 201214 yr Hello all ! I need help troubleshooting unformatted disks - I am running 4.7 pro and have attached my syslog below - This is my first computer build. 8 new 2T discs; no data - I precleared my discs (no errors), but removed the flash drive during the process. It appears the only error was I lost two preclear reports. - configured disks as 6 data disks, cache, parity - formated using the GUI. This took a long time ~8hrs. Unmenu indicated that it was building parity. - Parity finished (no errors), but disks indicated as unformatted - all except for the parity disk (OK) - It looks like I wrote to each of the 8 disks. Mymenu does not appear to show any errors. Even show temperatures. This appears to be a somewhat common problem associated with mounting. I am looking for loose connections. I may have been too aggressive with my cable management... I would appreciated any help with troubleshooting. I am available to provide any additional information (partition, file system) - just let me know the details syslog-2012-03-06.txt
March 6, 201214 yr I don't see anything out of the ordinary in your syslog. It is a somewhat common problem for a server to choke when trying to format many disks at once. Here's the simple solution: 1) Stop your array and unassign all data disks. 2) Start your array and assign disks 1 and 2 3) Format disks 1 and 2. 4) Rinse and repeat until all your disks are formatted. One a disk is formatted, you can leave it assigned when you repeat step 1.
March 6, 201214 yr Author I can't start the array with only two disks. I get a message on Unmenu "Stopped. Invalid configuration. Too many wrong and/or missing disks! " The other disks are still shown in unmenu, but with red light and 'missing' message. I stopped the array & unassigned all data disks (left parity assigned) I could not start array then assign, so I assigned data disks 1 & 2 and tried to restart, but got error message. Restart button not available.
March 6, 201214 yr Author Thanks - all disks are now formatted & visible in array initconfig cleared history, and I was able to 'rinse & repeat' formatting 2 disks at a time until the array was built. I cancelled the parity rebuild each time. I will rebuild parity later (I have no data currently in array). I greatly appreciate the excellent, timely assistance ! Now on to user shares & split levels !!
