March 6, 201214 yr Initially when I spec'd a build it was intended on OpenIndiana/ZFS calling for 16GB (non-ECC) memory on 4x modules. Is there anything I can do with these to get higher performance or any kind of actual usage? If not I may take 3 for a gaming PC with just 2GB memory. I'd prefer to use it in the unraid box but if its simply not needed then I can find other uses for it.
March 6, 201214 yr It is my understanding that the UnRaid OS is built to be lightweight and additional memory beyond 2GB will not add much performance gains if you are running a stock config. If you are running add-ons then you may take advantage of more memory, but 16gb for unraid is overkill.
March 7, 201214 yr I'm running 4gig now and I noticed some performance gains not proveable with test results, but noticed it. I'm sure there are many that are running Virtual machines that would say more ram the better.
March 7, 201214 yr It depends on how busy your machine is. Mine is very busy as it's the heart of all file services. I have 8GB. Where it helps is with caching, reads for large files and writes if you tune the kernel to leave the data in the cache longer. My writes burst at 50-60MB/s then slowly go down to about 35MB/s after 4-7GB. With more ram I bet that would keep the burst speed up for a longer period of time. However, if you have a desktop or gaming machine the extra ram will probably be more useful there. 2-4GB is enough for most unRAID installations.
