[SOLVED] Seasoned system new network issue "link beat not detected"

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've encountered a sudden network problem on an Unraid 4.7 system that up until today has been very solid. I came home after work and found all shares unavailable. No recent upgrades or changes in my Unraid system or home network. I checked all cabling, switch connections, etc... and physically all is well.

The mainboard is an Abit F-I90HD and I've been successfully using the onboard NIC (Realtek RTL8111B) with Unraid for well over a year.  No other NIC's present. The syslog shows "link beat not detected" for eth0 and the link marked down so that's my problem but I need some advice on how best to resolve...  In the bios and on start-up all looks fine and I see both the NIC and switch LEDs happily blinking and signalling until Unraid has booted then both go dark.

Syslog is attached...

Thanks,

..Collin

Turned out the problem was my 5 year old Netgear switch GS116.  After getting up close and personal w/ it today I noticed the LEDs indicated active links at 100Mbpps when many were GB. Turns out certain NIC's (like the one in my Unraid box) no longer connect at all while others only negotiated at 100Mbps.  Very strange but anyway... All is well once again after I replaced the switch.

The trip to Fry's to p/u the new switch put me in a tinkering mood so I upgraded my CPU, MB and Unraid to v5.14b today as well. Looks great and I'm looking forward to exercising the new features.
