New unraid build - array pool setup advice

Featured Replies

Hi! New to unraid, but not new to homelabs, etc. Recently had a proxmox instance and a synology NAS but now want to consolidate all of into unraid.

I have the following hardware:

2x 16TB spinning HDs

2x 6TB spinning HDs

1x 1TB SSD (SATA)

1x 500GB SSD (SATA)

N100 mobo with 2.5Gbe NIC + 6 SATA ports

My goal with Unraid is to host:

- VM/containers: Unifi controller, HAOS, Tailscale relay node, general linux testing, etc.

- NAS for TimeMachine backups, general data backup data, etc.

I'm new to unraid but have read some docs on the setup. Sounds like i generally want to do:

- 16TB parity device

- 1x Pool (EDIT: "Array" not pool) with:

 - 16TB

 - 6TB

 - 6TB

So 28TB total with a 16TB parity device for failover

Cache:

- 1TB SSD

- 500GB SSD

The cache can be used for all docker containers. I assume you can just create shared drives from the main pool if I wanted more storage space for a VM right? If i have a VM I assume it can just use app cache for its main file storage right?

Am i doing this right? Originally I was just going to RAID the two 16TB devices but it sounds like the parity device essentially handles that already?

This is referred to as the array in Unraid. Pools are outside the parity array, such as cache
