Migration strategy?

Featured Replies

Just bought pieces for my new unraid server, and I would very much like advice how to migrate all the data from old server to new server.

The new server consists of all new hard drives, so I'm not in need for the old drives already packed with data.

I have only one Pro license running on the old server....is it possible to use that license on my new server (same stick)?

And of course whats the easiest way to move all the data from old to new server?

The same flash can be used. Just not at the same time. Move the drives and the flash to the new system and then replace the disks one at a time. Or, buy a second license and run both servers concurrently and transfer over the network.

If you don't care about keeping parity intact on the old server, I can see 2 other ways to get it done.

First method, if you have extra SATA ports in the new server, physically move as many drives as will fit from the old server to the new, and copy the data to the new drives using snap and teracopy, or just internally copying from the /dev/sd?1 device to the protected array using mc. Lather, rinse and repeat until all drives are copied.

Second way, use a fresh usb stick with the free version and assign only 2 data drives at a time in the old server and copy over the network to the fully functional new tower. Don't assign parity in the old server. Lather, rinse and repeat until all drives are copied.

If you want to keep parity active at all times on both towers the only way I see is to buy another license.

Using the free version on the old server you can manually mount each drive and copy over the network with rsync
