Maximum size of a second Vdisk image in Unraid?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I’ve been experimenting with Vdisk image sizes on my Unraid array. I can successfully create, connect, and mount large images (up to 25TB of a test Vdisk) in a Windows VM. However, before taking this approach further, I’d like to understand the potential downsides.

Could you please share any concerns or issues that might arise from using such large Vdisk images? I’m looking for insights on potential problems or limitations to consider.

Thanks!

Its on HDDs on the main array at the moment

Size will be limited to the disk size the file is on. Have a look at the VM and disks allocated space. Example below disk is max 30G but only 6 currently used on disk because it is thin provisioned.

You never want a vdisk to be larger than the physical space on the drive where it is located.  It starts off initially provisioned but during use can grow towards the allocated size.  If it runs out of space to continue expanding the vdisk will fail.

Got it, So if I have 4TB drives on the Array I shouldn't make a Vdisk larger than 4TB. Once data starts being added to the Vdisk it will fail if it's larger than a physical drive?

Yes when it runs out of space to expand.

It can often be better to simply pass thru the physical disk to a VM rather than using a vdisk if you want the whole space available to be used by the VM.
