[Unraid 6.12.10] Media Server crashing when downloading and have no idea why

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

I built my server over half a year ago with the goal of turning it into a media server. I am still a novice at all this stuff.

The problem is that ever since building it and setting it up, it crashes whenever I try to download anything. The clients I have tried is qBit and Deluge.

The behavior seems to be boot file corrupts, can access dashboard and containers from the IP:Port but they can't communicate with each other.

Whenever it's about to freeze up, if I am on the dashboard for my server I can see a message pop up saying like "Unraid cannot communicate to your boot drive, please change it" and a link to change it.

Things I've tried:

  • Changing the boot drive (5 times to different manufacturers, using USB 2.0). Starting to think this might not be the problem
  • Also when it tells me there's an error with the boot drive, it tells me to connect it to a windows pc to repair. Windows says 0 items repaired. This seems to get rid of the error until next download
  • Not using download client (still running docker container but no downloads) and using all my other docker containers. 30 day lapse and no crash.
  • Waiting a couple of days (max 7 days) to see if it unfreezes. No luck.
  • Changing cache pool (2 SSDs).
  • Reinstalling all docker containers
  • Changing cache pool from BTRFS to ZFS
  • Allocating more space to Docker (have 50GB allocated, my containers use 12GB)
  • Monitoring Docker allocation space when downloading to see if the files are being saved to a container volume. It is not being saved into a docker volume
  • Ran memtest86 several times, no errors

Now peculiar interactions I've noticed:

  • Only crashes when I am downloading files
  • Tried different download speeds, different amount of downloads, many or one download, limit speed. Seems to arbitrarily happen.
  • You can still access docker containers by using [Tower IP]:[Port] but the docker containers cannot communicate with each other.
  • Can still connect to the Dashboard after it crashes but says it is missing the key file (connecting boot drive to windows pc gets rid of this message) (also have lifetime key)

Can also post the hardware but not sure if it's relevant.

I was also able to download the diagnostic files and have attached it to the post.

I'll try any suggestions you have!

Thanks in advance.

Flash drive is dropping offline less than 10 minutes after array start:

Nov 22 18:32:44 rofia kernel: usb 1-5: USB disconnect, device number 2
Nov 22 18:32:45 rofia kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 30720) failed

If it only drops when containers are running, there may be a configuration issue with one of them, or a server hardware problem, see if it only happens if a specific container is running.

I had all containers running last night and no problem. The problem comes up only when downloading media through qBit.

I did find right now that the /data path for Sonarr was pointing to appdata instead of the share I made specifically for downloads...

I also recreated the download share with a new unique name, I'm not sure if that was maybe causing the problem.

I put some files to download and it crashed again. Same problem of disconnecting the flash drive. I'll put the log files here also.

I have also noticed something new, when the media is in the cache it will cause the drive to disconnect again on reboot. If I run the mover before rebooting, no error.

Noticed new error behavior

Downloading may be taxing the server, causing the flash to drop, try downloading to a disk share (or exclusive share), and see if that help.

Alright! I'll try this, although I don't think it should be limiting my server as it is powerful.

EDIT: Tried your suggestion but I am still getting the same error
