Random network drops

Featured Replies

Hello

For the last week or at random interval's my unraid server loses all connectivity.  I can no longer ssh into it or reach the web ui. All dockers are no longer reachable on the network.  I see server on my UDM-PRO as connected and available.  It takes a reboot to fix the issue temporarily but then it randomly drops again, sometimes a day sometimes 2 days.  I'm terrible with network stuff and would love some help. Here are diagnostics I took this morning right before reboot. I don't know exactly what time but it was between 02:00 and 07:00.

Nothing directly connected to network, but a constant repeating error:

you UPS (connected through NUT) loses connection. The NUT daemon runs havoc.

This happens with some kind of UPS, the USB Port blocks and the machine becomes unresponsive for some time.

This MAY lead to "missing a resume packet" on the LAN (port stopped by flow control, the resume packet could not be received because NUT blocked everything).

To see if this is your problem, check two things:

1) if the machine is not reachable again, pull out the LAN cable. After a few seconds put it back in. If it works again then, this is likely the described problem above then:

2) deinstall NUT and unplug the USB Connection to the UPS!

If the network problems are gone, better run without UPS notifications.

(I even connected the UPS here to a raspberry running NUT, using NUT on UNRAID as a slave. But the "NUT running wild" reappeared on the PI too, UNRAID was not harmed, but the error messages that flooded the logs drove me crazy. So, at the end, I am running an "unconnected" UPS... 😞 The same UPS runs fine on Windows, no dropouts... seems to be a serious driver problem)

Thank you. Will definitely do that next time it drops and report back. It's a shame there's no fix for the ups.

Yeah, but as I said, it happens on many linux type systems. So we cannot blame UNRAID for it.

Good luck!

So I get no more errors in my system log but I just lost connection again, but I was using unraid's built in ups monitor.  Now Ive completed disconnected it and will monitor again.  This was in syslog:

Nov 25 19:27:19 zeus kernel: igc 0000:07:00.0 eth0: NIC Link is Down
Nov 25 19:27:20 zeus kernel: bond0: (slave eth0): link status definitely down, disabling slave
Nov 25 19:27:20 zeus kernel: device eth0 left promiscuous mode
Nov 25 19:27:20 zeus kernel: bond0: now running without any active interface!
Nov 25 19:27:20 zeus kernel: br0: port 1(bond0) entered disabled state
Nov 25 19:27:33 zeus kernel: igc 0000:07:00.0 eth0: NIC Link is Up 2500 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: RX
Nov 25 19:27:33 zeus kernel: bond0: (slave eth0): link status definitely up, 2500 Mbps full duplex
Nov 25 19:27:33 zeus kernel: bond0: (slave eth0): making interface the new active one
Nov 25 19:27:33 zeus kernel: device eth0 entered promiscuous mode
Nov 25 19:27:33 zeus kernel: bond0: active interface up!
Nov 25 19:27:33 zeus kernel: br0: port 1(bond0) entered blocking state
Nov 25 19:27:33 zeus kernel: br0: port 1(bond0) entered forwarding state

Just says its down and doesn't say why.

Yeah, the builtin UPS support is not better than NUTs (actually I once started with it, got that dropouts and then switched to NUTs just to see that the same evilness happens again 😞 )

Link loss... this maybe a cable problem ("bad cable", not suitable for high speed or too long).

Link drops, line settles, link is restored.

But this time, it recovered by itself?

No I have to unplug and plug back in every time.. The cable is only like 4 months old and it's cat 6 from ubiquiti. If it drops again with no nut plugged in I will try a new cable.

It's weird though I've had nut plug-in for like 6 months and never had an issue.. just started in the last couple of weeks. But it's been about 13 hours since I unplugged the ups and been okay so far. Will keep monitoring

There is another chance, where you can look... should be overcome by now, but I guess, its still creeping around...

Most of the cables still today are WRONG.

They maybe CAT6 or even higher class, but for a long period there were no correspondend plugs available.

These cables usually were sold with the print-on "raw cable".

You can also check them if you put in the plug into the NIC until it "clicks" in.

Then try (gently) to pull it back and push it forward again. If it moves (just a few mm), you have the wrong one.

Today's LAN Outlets are a very tiny bit longer than before. with the correct plugs, they sit tight and do not move at all.

As I said, hard to buy the correct one. But they are now on the market for over 2yrs, so chances get higher to catch a good one.

The wrong plugs can have mechanical problems when temperatures are changing. They lose contact now and then.
