unRAID Not Connecting To Network All Of A Sudden. Help ASAP!

Featured Replies

My unRAID server all of a sudden isn't connecting to my network. I can't access shares from my PC or Mac. I can still connect to the web gui no problem. I've tried restarting all the comps and the server several times but thats not working. Everything was working fine yesterday.

Is the unRaid array started?

  • Author

Yes the array is online,

I can connect through web gui no problem

Just can't access "Tower"

  • Author

I can access the shares if I directly type in \\tower\movies

but as soon as I close the windows the Tower disappears from the Network. Again this just happened today. Its been connecting to my w7 PC and Macs and PCH Players no problem.

I tried going into my servers MB Bios to make sure nothing had somehow got changed. Everything looks good and server boots up no problem.

My w7 workgroup name is WORKGROUP. In web gui settings I've tried workgroup, Workgroup, WORKGROUP and nothings working.

I put a "Towers" shortcut icon on my desktop to have quick access to my files. I need Tower to show up though.

That is because your windows PC is acting as the "Master Browser"  (The master browser process is handling the translation of "Tower" to the actual IP address via netBIOS.  when you shut off your window's PC, that process is not available to perform the translation.)

The usual solution is to set the option in unRAID for it to be a "Master Bowser"

You can find it in your unRAID settings page labeled as

"Local Master"

Set it to "Yes".  (not sure of the label on the 5.0 series, but that is the label on the 4.7 version)

It is set to yes, always has been.. Thats why I don't understand why all of a sudden "Tower" isn't showing up. Like I said its been working fine all along until today. And I haven't changed any settings so not sure whats going on. :/

make sure smb and nmb are both running on your tower.

Login as root and type

ps -ef | egrep 'smb|nmb'

You should see something like.

root      3540    1  0 Jan29 ?        00:00:25 /usr/sbin/nmbd -D

root      3542    1  0 Jan29 ?        00:00:01 /usr/sbin/smbd -D

also check your config.

egrep -i aster /etc/samba/*.conf

/etc/samba/smb-names.conf:local master = yes

Dump your /etc/resolv.conf file too.

cat /etc/resolv.conf

When you cannot resolve the \\tower can you access it by ip address?

This happen to me once and I just took the easy way out and instead of finding the problem. I just did a hard reset to my router . And haven't had any problems after the reset . Good luck

I currently just made a shortcut icon on my desktop to the "Tower"

But I would like to have it where it shows up under my network like it originally was.

Someone else also told me that worked for them.

Do I just unplug the router and plug it back in? I have a router from AT&T U-Verser. Its a 2-Wire Gateway

Yes, pull the plug, count to 10 and plug it back in.

I tried this and still no luck getting "Tower" to show up on my comps.

I've only had unRAID for maybe a month now. "Tower" was showing up no problem. Just all of a sudden it disappeared and I can't get it back. Could setting's in unRAID just randomly change on their own causing the Tower not to show up now?

Is the server connected to a switch. Just pull the network cable of the server and then re-insert after 10 seconds. Also reset the switch.

I'll try this in a bit.

Hi all,

I'm getting this exact same problem, it started a week or so ago, I'm not sure if it is related but we had a power failure in the house and a few days later I noticed this problem.

I have tried all of the advice people posted above and I still cannot get it to work.

I can map any of my shares by giving the full path name, but when I try and browse to \\TOWER I get the following error message from all my clients. Mostly Win7, but I can't access it from my Mac or also a WinXP PC.

\\tower is not accessible. You might not have the permission to use this resource.

Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The stub received bad data.

Up until now I have had around 8 months of trouble free access to this server.

Hopefully someone will have a few ideas I can try.

thanks

Alan

Edit: I'm running Unraid Server Plus, 5.0-beta13, and I don't see any sort of error in any of the logs that seems related to this.

Ok, I finally fixed this, so in case anyone else is getting this kind of problem but all their network settings and configs haven't changed try this.

I was checking the share configs on the server and noticed there was a lot of random shares from temporary folders in my cache drive, these were various media files that I hadn't copied into their final destination. So I moved them into a single temp folder on the cache drive and rebooted the server, all is now well again and I can browse to \\Tower from the Win7 clinets now.  :)

Chris,

I had the same problem with the same RG box from ATT.  I had U-Verse for two days.  I cancelled U-Verse and got Comcast back and used my WNDR3700 router again.  Did a hard reset and it fixed the issue.  Also, the ATT RG / Router isn't gigabit in case you didn't know.

Just wanted to highlight this as I ran into this problem recently and THIS is what fixed it. Cleaned up user shares and problem went away.
