December 2, 20241 yr Hi, So wondering why Unraid can't boot from the drives instead of a USB stick? I'm not a programmer so maybe it just won't work, but what I forsee is: Each drive is a boot drive - or at least capable of booting. Any changes are written to each drive. BIOS would be set up to boot from each drive - shouldn't matter what order, but boot from each drive such that if Drive 1 failed, BIOS should boot from drive 2 automatically. Granted there's not a huge disadvantage to using a USB drive (except a few things I've seen where if you want a sort of non official change to be made, you have to do some tinkering since some 'changes' not made to the USB stick will be lost upon reboot). Like for example I wanted to change my prompt to Powerlevel10k - but it's not straightforward on Unraid as it is on any other o/s. Is that on the roadmap? Just curious. Thanks!
December 2, 20241 yr Community Expert The main reason is that the license is bound to the serial number (UID) of the USB stick. Other reasons are for instance that everything (including config data) is located on the stick, you can easily pull it out and use it on a different computer. All settings will be there and no need to transfer a license. Having several boot drives would require that every change in config must be synchronized with all others. Sounds complicated... Adding permanent changes is also not too complicated as soon as you got the idea how it works and where to put your things. But its a bit dangerous, so I wont tell you here. Say what you want, the forum can tell you how to do it. Edited December 2, 20241 yr by MAM59
