December 4, 20241 yr I have 3 vms which I run on an Unraid server. Each vm has a dedicated (bare) root disk, as well as a dedicated GPU assigned to it. So they all run at bare metal speeds which is great. To access these VMs, I have a KVM on my desktop which maps a usb keyboard, mouse, webcam, and usb audio. In a perfect world, as I selected a VM on the KVM, the usb devices would be detached from the first device, and mounted on the next. This is what would happen if they were physical PCs. Alas, that is not what happens on Unraid. I assumed that if I selected "optional" on the vm edit screen for each device this would work perfectly. But it does not -- You can't select optional without also also marking select. This means the VM will refuse to start as the device is already mapped to another vm. Any ways around this behavior? Having to change usb mounts via my phone on every vm switch is a real hassle.
