Power consumption on 6.12.14 doubled compared to 6.12.5

Featured Replies

Hi fellow Unraid users,

over the course of the last year - and it's Unraid version updates - the power consumption of my server increased. On a fresh install (v. 6.12.5) it used to draw ~11W. Now, on 06.12.14 it draws ~24W. The measurements were taken with the same docker containers running (but obviously using newer versions) and the array spun down, with VMs being disabled. Disabling docker reduces the power consumption by about 2W. Powertop autotuning has been run on both versions before the measurements (although I am not sure which C-States were actually achieved since powertop only reported C3 both times, but I have read somewhere that this is a know bug).

I noticed the first increase in power consumption (approx. 6W) after upgrading to v. 6.12.8.

I've also read somewhere that the drivers for the network controller on my mainboard (RTL8125 2.5GbE) are suboptimal for some people, so I went ahead and installed the alternate driver "RTL8125 2.5GbE" from the Unraid apps section.

Does anyone have a clue what might be going on here?

Sorry if the question might be a bit vague. I'll gladly add more information if needed.

Thank you in advance and best regards!

I think it would benefit resolution if you posted your hardware specs - there might be others with the same gear (specifically mobo) who can post their experience.

If someone else on 6.12.14 with the same mobo is getting more like your 11W @ idle, you will already have narrowed it in quite a bit to be something local to you. On the other hand, if others with same mobo - or chipset - report the same ~24W, you will be know where to look more.

Absolutely!

I've got a MSI MAG B760M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 Motherboard paired with an Intel Core I5 13500, 32GB of RAM, 2 Crucial P3 Plus NVME SSDs, 2 18TB Seagate HDDs and a Corsair B550 PSU.

Might be a uncommon choice for a server, but I like to tell myself I had a reason those choices :)

@ShadowbladeI also tested the 8125B card back a few months and was also stucked in C3. Without it my system reaches C8.

Also in my case the power consumption was higher at some point after unraid updates.

So I dropped the card and tested the Intel i226v, which was worse with total freezes of the system.

I think the new unraid 7.1.0-beta1 with it's new kernel 6.12 could breath some new life in my 2,5 GBE upgrade project 😁

So what you are running now?

2,5 GBE card?

Which one?

How's your power consumption and c states?

Thx
