Any  idea, I read in some other thread it can be related to a bad flash (the one I use now is brand new) I join my syslog if any of you have time to have a look :

I would like to know as well...After every reboot, unRAID runs a parity check. I am running the latest beta version.

Your syslog looks fine, except a parity check is started for unknown reasons, and there are a couple of network dropouts in the 13 minutes between the time you started the server and the time you logged into it.

 

I'm not sure I know all of the possible reasons for an unRAID array to start properly with a valid configuration and then immediately begin a parity check, but the only two reasons I can think of are (1) an improper shutdown previously, such as a power outage, or (2) a good shutdown but a failure to update the flash drive.  The first is not possible with your array, because an improper shutdown results in the replaying of 2 to 5 transactions on each data drive, and you don't have any transactions replaying, on any drives.  So it looks like the second case to me.

 

There have been other similar cases, as you mentioned, but it is not necessarily a bad flash, it could also be a bad USB chipset or driver or some other motherboard failure.  Another user had a good flash, but something was wrong with an assigned IRQ, and after awhile a malfunction either of the motherboard hardware, or the kernel configuration of same, or some other kernel failure, would cause that user to lose access to their USB flash drive.

 

The reason why these cause the parity check each restart is because the flash drive, specifically the /boot/config/super.dat file, could not be updated at the time of shutdown, to indicate a clean shutdown.  It is similar to clearing a 'dirty bit'. 

 

As far as is recorded in your syslog, there is no problem with your flash drive.  You might try capturing a syslog immediately before powering down and rebooting your server, to see if any thing further is recorded about your flash drive.  If you do see new errors related to your flash appear in the syslog, then you might try moving it to completely different USB ports, or adjusting related BIOS parameters.

I found out what might be the root of the problem, for some reason I saw a fat panic on the key causing it to go offline and umounted or read-only , so there was nothing to write back to.

The reason, I have no idea, might be that spurious thingy on an used irq, I don't know, i moved some pci card arround, and it seems to work ok now, i will continu to investigate.

To fix, you might try unplugging the flash drive, putting it your PC and running checkdisk on it.

 

Before you unplug it from the PC, make sure to click on the taskbar icon to "remove it safely" AND to wait for data to be written to it.

 

Then, you can try it again in the unRAID array.  Odds are good it will work.

I have seen spurious IRQ messages in many syslogs.  They usually appear to be harmless, although noteworthy, as there is usually no further involvement of that IRQ, and no alarm is raised by the kernel itself.  In your case, it is IRQ15, which you are not using, normally reserved for a second IDE channel off the motherboard.

I have no PC so to speak, will the dosfsck work ? ottherwise i'll have to rosrt to  vmware

 

 

Sure, dosfsck will work... but it is not part of the usual unRAID distribution.

I suppose you could run it from any Linux distribution that has it included.

 

I suppose you could try to find the binary in a slackware package and add it to unRAID.

 

Tom, could you include dosfsck in a future release?

I do have dosfsck in my install, in the mean time i booted my older usb key.

 

Booted a VM, the super dat cannot be copied off the flash disk, could it be that since unraid cannot write to it either, it just crash. is it safe to remove it (if i can otherwise i'll do a clean install)

 

 

Attached is a copy of dosfsck.  Unzip it on your flash drive and you can run it from in unRAID.

 

On your system, it looks like the flash drive is /dev/sdd1, so the command would be

 

/boot/dosfsck -v /dev/sdd1

If it finds any errors, it should prompt you to fix them.

 

Before you delete the super.dat file, try to fix the file system, otherwise, you are risking doing more damage.

 

If it is corrupt, then yes, I think it will be re-created when you re-boot with it missing.

As I said, dosfsck is in uRAID, 4.2.4 at least, I ran it on the flash, got some problem on th boot sector and a choice of fat, but whatever choices I made it didn't seem to have any effect, so I did another with the -a automatic recovery, and it seem to do something positif, I 'll continu to check in the next few days, but at least i got some proper reboot and no switch to read only yet.
