March 24, 201214 yr Dang, help!! I've had a stable, happy system for years. All desired features and issues I've readily resolved from posts herein, so for that first of all - ta! However, yesterday it all changed. v4.7. I've got the Zotac D-ITX: http://www.zotac.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_images-SRW.tpl&product_id=346&category_id=96&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=100178〈=em Yesterday, my wife found that disk3 was showing as empty. Panic! Disks 1 and 2 still showed content, but not 3 - it was the differences in behaviour that worried me most at the time. I restarted the server: disk5 showing red, but disk3 content was back, so I copied off to a USB drive the really important stuff (pics of the kids, etc). Couldn't copy it to disk4, tried via putty: after 20mins, disk4 was being reported as read only. Now on a cold start to get the attached log, disk4 took longer than normal to mount, but did. disk5 still showing red. disk5 also taking forever to dismount. I've also seen tower switch to being inaccessible on windows systems, and the interface not being accessible via a browser (but I can still ping it). What's wrong? I've ordered a replacement for disk5 as I foresaw that as likely to be necessary, but its the behaviour of the other disks and the general instability that worries me far more. I wouldn't mind losing the data on disk 5, it's just backups of a low number of old games I still have the physical media for, but disks 1-4 are the media collection. While I still have the optical media, I've invested man-months of time getting them in the right format and with the metadata I want, etc. Help! -- Scotty Log_24MAR2012.txt
March 24, 201214 yr The syslog is less then 3 minutes long and does to show any problems. Is the system running? Post a log showing startup and at least 20 minutes.
March 25, 201214 yr Author OK, sorry, not really au fait with all this! I've attached a log of 20mins or so from a start-up this morning. As you can see, it's looking worse - disk 3 now 'red' missing, disk 5 'blue', 'new disk'. :'( Thank you! 1131_25MAR2012.txt
March 25, 201214 yr Author I've attached all of them, just in case, and labelled disks 3 and 5. I'd shutdown to rule out cables, and on startup disk3 is showing back again, disk5 back to red. I've attached the more recent syslog too, just in case, and a later log taken after I'd done some moving of files off disk3 to other disks (1-4). March 25, 201214 yr Author I've re-checked all cables. disk3 alternates between missing and valid. disk5 still red when disk3 green, otherwise blue.
March 25, 201214 yr What type of PSU? Are all the power and SATA cables new with good connections? Are you using a drive cage?
March 25, 201214 yr Author Antec truepower. Had it 3 or so years (the age of the server). Cables all around the same age, server had operated well for that length of time. It's been over a year since the last drive replacement, I think (to increase capacity). All drives are in the internal rack, i.e. part of the case (Fractal Design Define R3). SATA cables aren't the latching variety, but the connections all seem fine.
March 26, 201214 yr Author By the way, don't hold back on telling if you think my motherboard's on the way out - I'd rather be safe than sorry. Oh, and the new 2tb drive has arrived, so I'm good to go on replacing either disk3 or disk5, whichever is required.
March 26, 201214 yr If you have a spare PSU I'd try to switch that first. It sounds like my old system when it was having power issues, I chased BSOD's all around the system for a week!
March 27, 201214 yr Author Are there any recommendations on which drive I should, if at all, replace with the new 2tb that just arrived? Thank you!
March 28, 201214 yr Author I should have added two things. 1. I've no easy access to a spare PSU, at least, not one that could power everything in the server. 2. I had no idea until 30mins ago that 4.7 had issues with transmission, which I've had running onto disk5. Could that have done this? If so, what's the recommended recovery?
March 29, 201214 yr You may not need a psu that can power everything. You can use a second PSU to power some of your disks and jumper the power connection so that it turns on. See http://www.overclock.net/t/96712/how-to-jump-start-a-power-supply-psu-test-a-power-supply-and-components
March 30, 201214 yr Author Guys, I've no idea why, but after switching out disk5, all looks rosy and stable. ?? Could be the last go round the cables while I disk switched, but all back to normal service!! Ta for all help provided, much appreciated.
