Pre Clear advice please

Featured Replies

hello all

i am in the process of moving about 10 drives from my pc to my new server.

yesterday at noon i added two drives to the server, and started them preclearing through screen.  Later that night, i inserted a 3rd drive (while server on) and began pre clearing it.

One of the initial 2 drives is now complete, and i've received email notifications about the other one.  however, i've never received a notice about this 3rd one, other than the inital email saying 'preclearing is started'.  its been about 10 hours and i've received no notice at all about the progress of this drive.

when i started preclearing the first one, the screen window seemed to hang, in that it just sat there at 0% and showed the process running for 0:01 ie just one second and never advanced.  all signs point to the fact that this 3rd drive is not currently preclearing.

no idea what to do, or what to check?  i'm logged out of screen, and when i log back in it says there are several suitable screens on:

10242.pts-0 tower

31943.pts-0 tower

and four others

it says

typs "screen [-d] -r [pid.]tty.host" to resume one of them... i assume i'm probably supposed to subsitute one of the numbers for something in the string but i'm not sure what?  substitue the -d?  or the pid.?  any advice here?

EDIT:  i see in another post i'm supposed to type

screen -r 11844.pts-0.Tower for example... when doing this, i get the error:

cannot find terminfo entry for 'vt100'

Help?

Lastly, if i get to the preclearing screen for what i think is the 'stuck' drive, what should i do?  should i stop the array and reboot the server?  i assume this will kill the stuck job and then restart?

sorry for the long message, so far i've successfully precleared 5 drives, but this last one is acting a bit different

set your terminal emulation to "xterm" by typing

TERM=xterm

export TERM

then resume your screen session.

ok thanks.  those commands enable me to go back and see a session.  i can see about 10 different sessions open... i can only seem to log into one at a time... not sure how to go back to see the list.

uggh i am having a tough time with this screen program.  i think i'd like to shutdown my various sessions as there's no real need to have so many open.. i am currently preclearing one drive (sdg), and i can see its progressing, and i think its possible that i'm preclearing another drive (sdh) possibly several times, i think i started preclearing on this drive a few times because it appeared unresponsive

i'm kind of thinking of letting sdg finish preclear, then rebooting the server to cancel the preclears of sdh, and then restarting a sdh preclear... does this sound dangerous?  i think i'm currently preclearing the sdh a few times concurrently which can't be good!!!

please help, i'm a real newb with this and i'm not sure what to do next!!!

google

linux man screen

see the manual page for "screen"

Look under default key-bindings.  You can switch from one screen session to another from within screen.

C-a  (Control A) followed by another letter as in:

C-a p    = previous window

C-a n    = next window

pretty sure you can exit a session by typing:

exit

from within a window.

ok thanks... i appreciate your patience with a frustrated newb!

i can cruise around to my several open screens... one thing i noticed is that i definitely have at least two 'jobs' running which are preclearing the same drive... i can see one at 11% and one at 16% both for sdh.  i know its stupid but i didn't do this intentionally!

when i get to one of the windows that displays the above, i don't know how to stop the job... i tried exit and C-a K (for kill, as per help) but both of these only kill the window, not the job itself...

any ideas on what commands to actually stop the duplicated pre clears?

PS i did the google search you mentioned but still can't see a way to stop the preclear... there seems to be lots of ways to kill the windows thought!
