Performance problems when copying data in unprotected unRAID

Featured Replies

Hi,

i just installed my new unRAID build (5b14) and want to copy all of my old data from external drives (eSata and USB 2.0 / USB 3.0 - mostly NTFS). Right now I just configured both drives to be part of the array without having a parity or cache drive. When I now copy my data from those external drives, the maximum writing speed is only about 15 MB/s.

I also tried to copy the the data from my Zotac AD02 over Gigabit LAN and I got the same max. speed.

Is there any way to improve the transferspeed? 15 MB/s just seems a bit slow to me.

Here is my build:

- HP MicroServer N36L (preinstalled bios)

- 2x Seagate Barracuda SATA III 3TB (ST3000DM001)

- TRENDnet N900 TEW-680MB as Gigabit switch

Regards

Post a syslog. Do you notice any difference in speed between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 or eSATA?

I did some performance testing on that two drives:

Disk 1:

/dev/sdb:

Timing cached reads:  2022 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1010.46 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads:  512 MB in  3.01 seconds = 170.30 MB/sec

root@Tower:/var/log#  dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/disk1/test.dd count=8192000

8192000+0 records in

8192000+0 records out

4194304000 bytes (4.2 GB) copied, 159.224 s, 26.3 MB/s

Hi,

no I do not see any difference between copying from direct attached external drive (USB 2.0) or by network over smb (USB 3.0 and eSATA). The eSATA drive I cannot attach to the unRAID server because it has an ext4 format.

Disk 2:

/dev/sdc:

Timing cached reads:  2010 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1004.75 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads:  512 MB in  3.02 seconds = 169.61 MB/sec

root@Tower:/var/log#  dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/disk2/test.dd count=8192000

8192000+0 records in

8192000+0 records out

4194304000 bytes (4.2 GB) copied, 158.281 s, 26.5 MB/s

The write speeds really seem slow to me for a sata drive. Any suggestions? Bios settings or something?

Even when I copy from /mnt/disk1 to /mnt/disk2 it has only a transferrate up to 26 MB/s

This review is telling me that it should be by far faster: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/3tb_seagate_barracuda_review
