V7 Unraid Disk Allocation -- what goes where?

Featured Replies

Hey y'all!

I'm nuking my unraid setup and starting over. This is mostly because I am bored and never really used my server for anything meaningful.

I currently have:

- 4 M2 SSDs, 1 tb each

- 2 M2 SSDs, 256 gb each

- 2 3.5" HDD, 4 tb each

I'm going to use the V7 release candidate, and I'm fine with ZFS or anything else "funky". Any suggestions on how I should best set up my drives? Some example usage I had in mind:

- Plex

- Old windows VM (eventually I'll be using a film scanner from the 90s on this)

- Misc. docker containers

- A share for me to store lightroom photo editing files

- A space for me to dump all my old files / access infrequently (could be nextcloud on a docker container, could just be a SMB share

- I anticipate 1/1.5 tb TOTAL data storage, at least for the foreseeable future.

Some thoughts:

- 1 pool with the 4 1tb SSDs

- 1 pool with the 2 256 gb SSD (is there a benefit to making these separate?) → how do I decide what goes on which pool?

- 1 array with 4tb HDD, I'd only use this for local/internal daily snapshots? unless I have a good reason to do otherwise?

p.s. this is my first post on the forum, sorry if it's in the wrong spot <3

Thanks for your opinions!!!!
