March 31, 201214 yr I have been buying pieces over time to get a new Unraid server built. I have been building PC's for awhile but am definitely at a disadvantage when it comes to server builds. I am stuck with what type of cables that I require. Also not sure if the backplane for the Norco 4220 is included with the chassis or is it a seperate item that I order. Here is what I have so far: 1 x NORCO RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Server Chassis w/ 20 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS 6G Drive Bays (Mini SAS Connector) - OEM 1 x SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C204 Micro ATX Intel Xeon E3 Server Motherboard 1 x Intel Xeon E3-1230 Sandy Bridge 3.2GHz LGA 1155 80W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80623E31230 1 x Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) ECC Unbuffered Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G 19 x HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117) 2TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive 1 x HITACHI Deskstar 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 (0f12115) 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive 1 x SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold ((SS-650KM Active PFC F3)) 650W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply 2 x SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS RAID Controller Would this fulfill the rest of the hardware I would require to run a 20 drive system? If I need to order the backplane for the 4220 can someone provide the link to where one may be purchased? 4 x NORCO C-SFF8087-D SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 Internal Multilane SAS Cable - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133034&cm_re=8087-_-16-133-034-_-Product 1 x NORCO C-SFF8087-4S Discrete to SFF-8087 (Reverse breakout) Cable - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133033&cm_re=8087_reverse-_-16-133-033-_-Product Also looking to get a 42RU Rack/Cabinet. Anyone have good recommendations for buying one that is the best bang for your buck (less than $1000.00 would be ideal).
March 31, 201214 yr That looks about correct... the only thing I might consider is going to a 750watt PSU. I didnt do the math on it so the 650 might be ok. In addition, you would get better power savings with the larger PSU I would suspect. EDIT: dont forget that unRAID pro is actually 22 drives. 20 data drives plus parity and cache.
April 1, 201214 yr Those parts are correct, including the cables. You can save a bit of money on the miniSAS cables by using these instead: 1m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male to Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male Cable - Black The 650W PSU is fine as long as you plan to use green drives. You can also save money with a non-modular power supply, such as the Corsair 650W. Check craigslist and other local sources for racks, they are every expensive to ship. The backplanes do come with the Norco case, no need to buy them separately.
