January 5, 20251 yr I've been using old server hardware for quite sometime. However, running at a constant 200w I want to upgrade - especially since I don't fully utilize the existing hardware. Current: Motherboard: Supermicro X9DRi-LN4+ CPU: Dual Intel® Xeon® CPU E5-2697 v2 @ 2.70GHz Memory: 128 GiB DDR3 Multi-bit ECC Case: Fractal Define 7 XL Graphics (for processing): Nvidia Tesla P4 8GB GPU Drive Adapter: 4 Port M.2 NVME SSD To PCIE X16 Adapter Converter Card PCIE Drive Adapter (installed, not used): LSI 9210-8i 6Gbps SAS HBA Using primarily Dockers such as the arrs, Immich, tvheadend, Plex, NextCloud and some VMs such as Windows and Ubuntu. So, what I have really is overkill. I'd like to bring everything down to a smaller form factor and simplify things. My goal is to keep the box primarily dockers and maybe a single VM. I am looking to build a Proxmox box for most of my VM needs. Here are things that I would like and could use some help with: Hard Drives: I would like to use up to 8 HDDs for storage, but up to 4 M.2s for cache and maybe a VM Motherboard: I like the idea of 8 onboard SATA ports and 4 M.2 ports so the ASRock Z690 Extreme ATX motherboard is right up my alley. LAN Ports: One thing I've utilized the MOST is the dedicated IPMI port on the current motherboard. There have been times where I lost power long enough were my UPS shut the server down. I have then been able to remote into and boot it back up when power has returned. Also, I've encountered random shutdowns outside of power loss so same concept. The ASRock motherboard doesn't have an IPMI Lan port so I'm not sure if there is an alternate solution. RAM: Not sure I really need ECC Ram - but I think 64GB will suffice Processor: Looking at anything with built-in iGPU for transcoding like the i5-12600k, but would potentially like more cores (12-20) Case: I want a Tower case, but I want hotswap bays. Where I keep the server it's not easy to pull the full case out all the time so hotswap would be useful. Current case is also WAY too big. Would like something smaller like mATX (or ATX to support the right motherboard) Wattage: Anything under 30w would be amazing Hard Drives: Plan on utilizing everything existing. But not going above 8 HDD and 4 M2s Looking to spend around $600 but will go up to $800 if I find the right parts. Thanks! Edited January 5, 20251 yr by ryryonline
January 7, 20251 yr Author Starting to put something together here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3VBNzP. A little high for what I wanted to spend. I'm wondering if DDR5 is worth the cost when DDR4 is significantly cheaper. I could possibly drop to an 11th gen CPU (still with iGPU). I would only be transcoding max 4 movies at a time.
