Nearly no Upload Speed to Unraid via Samba from Windows Client

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I'm facing a significant issue when copying data to an Unraid host, and I’m struggling to pinpoint the cause. Here’s the breakdown of the situation:

Copying from Unraid to a Windows client: Performance is perfect.

Copying from a Windows client to the Unraid host: Extremely slow (barely a few KB/s).

Copying from the Windows client to a second Unraid host: Also very slow.

Copying from one Windows host to another Windows host: No issues at all.

Copying from a macOS client to the Unraid host: No issues.

Copying from a Windows client to a Debian host (Samba share): Works flawlessly.

Copying backups to a Proxmox Backup Server (hosted as a Docker container on Unraid): No issues.

It seems like the problem is related to the Samba service on the Unraid host, but only when writing data from Windows clients. Reading data from the Unraid host works fine across all client operating systems.

Additional details:

The issue occurs on multiple Windows versions (10 and 11).

It persists regardless of the type of connection used (LAN or WLAN).

I tested both with and without using a cache drive, and there is no difference in performance.

iPerf tests reflect the same behavior, showing significant issues during write operations from Windows to Unraid.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem or knows how to resolve this? I’m not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards
Sebastian

Are these Windows installs VMs on Unraid or bare metal?

  • Author

Partly, I have tests from several Windows VMs, installed on multiple proxmox Hosts, as well as from a bare metal installation, including the bare metal Macs installation. No VM ist installed on the unraid Host.

Attached are the diagnostics.

What surprises me is that I have no issues moving files on my clients otherwise.

Since there are no problems when transferring files via macOS or Linux to Unraid, between Windows clients, or during backups to the Proxmox Backup Server running in a Docker container on the Unraid server, I’ve concluded that it might be a Samba-related issue.

Downloads within the Unraid server itself, such as during the installation of Docker containers, are performant. However, I also experience issues when, for example, uploading images via the web GUI of the Immich server running in a Docker container on Unraid. Here, too, the upload speed is extremely slow.

For Windows VMs, updated to 6.12.14 and retest, there's known kernel issue with the virtio network driver in 6.12.13

Sorry JorgeB, i didnt understand your question at the beginning correctly.

I added some additional informations about your reply.

The Windows VM are Not installed at the unraid Host. They are installed in a proxmox Host. The unraid Host ist also running under proxmox. But i passtrought a seperate Intel nic to the unraid VM.

I also tested when i use the proxmox Linus Bridge in the unraid VM. Same result...

But then Windows VMs installed on the proxmox Hosts are of course using virtio. Dies rhe Problem also occours with a virtio at the Client Side, Not at the Host Side?

But the Test from the Windows based MacBook doesnt use virtio, IT uses the physical nic. But also with the Same Bad result.

It will if they are also using a kernel with this issue, you can try a different network driver.
