January 6, 20251 yr I've been running unraid for a few year and have never had a drive error. I installed a Startech 8 port sata HBA less than a month ago. this is the second time a drive has had a problem on the HBA. Not currently on site to physically do anything. Just trying to see what might have caused it and my best next steps forward? crusty-diagnostics-20250106-1053.zip
January 6, 20251 yr Community Expert It's not logged as a disk problem, could be power/connection, though I've seen some issues before with those controllers, despite technically they should work fine.
January 6, 20251 yr I am really interested you problem. I have had intermittant drive disabled trouble since I started by server. I have a cheap used HBA and I suspect it to be the problem. If you find this is the problem and a better HBA is the solution, please let me know.
January 6, 20251 yr Community Expert If the HBA in question is this one, look at the review ratings. Not what I would would want to use in my server! https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Port-SATA-PCIe-8P6G-PCIE-SATA-CARD/dp/B09FY9FBTN/ 12 minutes ago, demanding-chief3698 said: If you find this is the problem and a better HBA is the solution, please let me know. Personally, I would be looking for one of the LSI-based controllers on E-Bay. Shop the reputation of the vendors as many of the new cards that are using the older chip sets are counterfeit. By that I mean that even though they carry the LSI logo, they were not made by LSI unless they are being savaged from old server farms--- then they are not new but used. (I am not saying that the counterfeit cards are necessary 'bad' but you are buying a pig-in--a-poke. So you only have the vendor to fall back on if you have a problem. (I have found that many long-time E-Bay vendors really value their reputations as a quality vendor and will bend over to see that you are satisfied with their products.)

I found a LSI 9300-16i from a 99.6% seller. guess I'll give it a try. until then, IIRC all i have to do is, stop the array, remove the parity drive, start the array, stop it again, add the parity drive back and then start the array and let it rebuild? I haven't shut down or done anything to the array yet. Edited January 7, 20251 yr by PassTheSalt add screenshots

January 8, 20251 yr Community Expert Parity2 and disk5 dropped at the same time, do they share a power splitter or similar? Also reboot and post new diags after array start.

Thats really weird... The files that went missing from plex aren't even on disk 5... thats scary.. New Diag. I'll own you a couple coffees thanks JorgeB for helping me. After the reboot the other files seemed to come back into plex.... They share an HBA card. an evidently low quality one that i will replace as soon as the new one arrives. On the same power supply but not on the same line crusty-diagnostics-20250108-0951.zip Edited January 8, 20251 yr by PassTheSalt
January 8, 20251 yr Community Expert @PassTheSalt, a cautionary note. If you have been inside the server case for any reason, when you are done, double (and triple) check that all SATA data and power cables are fully inserted in their sockets at both ends. It takes very little force to partially disconnect any SATA connection!
January 8, 20251 yr Community Expert Everything looks normal so far, try resync parity, f you have a different PSU it may be worth using it.

Never had an issue with a drive and suddenly two after installing the HBA. Thank you for your help! Sending a coffee your way!
