IBM UPS (rebranded APC UPS) Setup question

I got a IBM Smart-UPS 1500THV with an APC AP9617 Network Management Card. It is connected to my LAN and unraid sees it through apcupsd. Do I still need a USB or serial connection from the UPS to my server to signal any power outage and to have any the unraid server and other servers be gracefully shutdown? Must it be configured in a Master/Slave fashion or can the other servers be signalled over my LAN?

    If APCUPSD recognizes the UPS over the LAN, then there's a good chance it will work without a USB or serial cable.  Why not just test it and see what happens?
