April 4, 201214 yr Hello all, I am working on spec'ing out my first build and would appreciate some of your feedback/experiences. My current NAS solution is a 1TB external USB hard disk hooked up to an Addonics NAS adapter and I am quickly running out of space and struggling with the FAT32 limitations. I am looking to start with 3 disks (2 data, 1 parity) but definitely want the option to expand it down the road as necessary. I can't see myself going over 10-12TB but you never know... Also, green drives are fine with me. My approx. budget is $300 without the drives - around $750 all-in. I don't have any parts lying around to reuse. After doing some research I think I have a pretty generic build but wanted to run it by the community first: CPU - AMD Sempron 145 Sargas 2.8GHz http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103888 Motherboard - BIOSTAR A880G+ AM3 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138283 Case - AZZA Helios 910 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517007 PSU - CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026 Memory - Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134812 Hard Disks - HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 2TB (x3) http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145475 Flash Drive - Lexar JumpDrive FireFly 8GB USB 2.0 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820191282 (I am not sure if I need this yet...thoughts?) Hard Disk Cage - COOLER MASTER STB-3T4-E3-GP 4-in-3 Device Module Hardisk Cage http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817993002 I'm guessing there are also some cable requirements but I am not too sure what I need. At least one more SATA cable? Anything for power? Thanks in advance. Updated after reading the read this first... sticky. Darn noobs! (me)
April 4, 201214 yr You might want to look at this website: http://unraid.me/buy/. Have a great build designed for budget that will exactly fit your needs, and has some nice discussion on the "buy" page about the components. That motherboard in your build has only 4 SATA ports - if you're looking for 10-12TB ultimately, you might want to get one with 6. Cable-wise - you'll need a SATA cable for each HDD you're going to attach. Power will be built-in the to PSU so no need to get anything further there. Think you'll probably want the cage to mount the drives in - again, read up on the unraid.me site. 8GB flash drive is overkill, but at $10 I say get it!
April 4, 201214 yr Author Thanks for the advice Christuf. After some more poking around on these forums and unraid.me I decided on going with a motherboard with 6 SATA ports: ASRock 880GM-LE http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157199 I couldn't find the unraid.me suggested Biostar A760G board at our most popular online Canadian merchants. I'm going to pull the trigger tonight! Thanks again. I'll let you know how it all works out.
April 5, 201214 yr Thanks for the advice Christuf. When I started my unRaid server, I got lucky and found a new Biostar A760, with CPU and cooler for $100 bucks shipped. They are hard to find since they've been discontinued, but there a lot of mobo's out there that will work. Also, I bought one of the Hard Disk Cage - COOLER MASTER STB-3T4-E3-GP 4-in-3 Device Module Hardisk Cage, and one of the XIGMATEK CCA-EMFCB-U01 4 in 3 HDD Cage Extra Hard Drive Bay, and I would strongly recommend the Cooler Master over the Xigmatek. Xigmatek does not come with any hardware, and they aren't as nice looking as the cooler master.
